Description Two ancient Indo-European and Vedic gods. Vedic Mitra identical to the Iranian Mithra and Roman Mithras. Varuna is identical to the Iranian Ahura Mazda and the Roman Jupiter.

From Wikipedia:
Vedic Mitra is the patron divinity of contracts and meetings. He is a prominent deity of the Rigveda distinguished by a relationship to Varuna, the protector of ṛtá. Together with Varuna, he counted among the chief Adityas, a group of deities with social functions. They are the supreme keepers of order and gods of the law.
Varuna and Mitra are the gods of the blood oath and tribal contracts, often twinned as Mitra–Varuna (a dvandva compound). In the Vedic hymns, Mitra is often invoked together with Varuna, as Mitra-Varuna. In some of their aspects, Varuna is lord of the cosmic rhythm of the celestial spheres, while Mitra brings forth the light at dawn, which was covered by Varuna. Mitra together with Varuna is the most prominent deity and the chief of the Adityas in the Rigveda.

In the late Vedic Shatapatha Brahmana, Mitra-varuna is analyzed as "the Counsel and the Power" — Mitra being the priesthood (Purohita), Varuna the royal power (Rājān).

In Vedic literature, Mitra and Varuna are portrayed as icons of affection and intimate friendship between males (the Sanskrit word mitra means “friend” or “companion”). Ancient Brahmana texts furthermore associate Mitra and Varuna with the two lunar phases and same-sex relations: “Mitra and Varuna, on the other hand, are the two half-moons: the waxing one is Varuna and the waning one is Mitra. During the new-moon night these two meet and when they are thus together they are pleased with a cake offering. Verily, all are pleased and all is obtained by any person knowing this. On that same night, Mitra implants his seed in Varuna and when the moon later wanes, that waning is produced from his seed.” (Shatapatha Brahmana 2.4.4.19) Varuna is similarly said to implant his seed in Mitra on the full-moon night for the purpose of securing its future waxing.

I'm sorry, but in my viewpoint, gods are anyhow genderless or androgynous, they might have no human form as well but the way we see them is what we found in art and media. They might not have any human features at all...

And who are you to dare judge them?

This drawing is perfect. There is some androginy to both characters I happen to love extremely. The way they look into each other. Very beautiful.

This is another insight into the ancient acceptance of the same-gender relationships. It existed in Greece, Rome, Persia, China, Japan and Korea, and I always wondered if it was a thing in India as well, but now I have no doubts anymore.

Thank you for sharing this information and for the absolutely beautiful artwork! My heart almost stops when I see your illustrations. I normally only feel this way when I'm feeling in love with a person, it's amazing that art can create the very same feeling. I had read quite a lot of yaoi but I don't remember ever getting this deep feeling that I get from your illustrations.

Thank you! Yep, the persians are awesome , also don't forget about Ottoman Turkey and Arabia , same-sex liasons were pretty prevalent from medieval to pre-modern times. Look at koceks tradition and other kinds of male beloveds there is so much various kinds of love -- it's surprising how much people don't know how the past was.

Yes, yaoi is a fun for fans, most likely young people. But history is the real matter, it changes the mind, it changes the mentality, real history is the past that can change the future. Is how we accept the truth it will give the rights not just to exist, but to live :3

Oh my god, I'm sorry I'm gonna sound very selfish in this reply but oh my god, the texts you've linked to will keep me inspired for years! I already fully read the first two ones about Persians and their homosexuality Began reading about the Ottomans which seemed so scientifically heavy at first but later became quite interesting, I tried finding a PDF of it but failed and it was frustrating to have so many pages missing at google books... However, the last text about Arabia IS already a PDF and it seems to more or less replicate the contents of the Ottoman one, so that's definitely gonna be a long and interesting read!

Also, these texts are exactly what I needed for my own project, I was working on a fantasy world which has alternative and more sexually practical morals and so most of the youths are prostitutes because it's very easy to make money for their education while they're young and attractive, and when they grow up they would already have a good profession. But I always thought it's sort of offensive to call them "prostitutes" and have a world where all youths are whores... but after reading these texts on poetry, I only had the feeling that they practically describe exactly what I wanted to do in my world, except in a lot better way, calling the youths "beloveds" instead. I really need to steal this idea because it's so beautiful it's scary o_o These texts really are like a fountain of references and inspirations!

I like your statement about the real history being the past that can change the future. This statement strongly reflects in your gallery, since most of your subjects are historical and not merely fictional. I really like this realism, that each illustration is backed up with real sources. Personally I always tried to stay as far as possible from the reality simply because the world I wanted to see had nothing to do with the world around me, but these glimpses into the past make it clear that the world the way I always wanted to see it, it actually was real some time in the past! Perhaps in my previous incarnation I lived in that kind of time and maybe that's why I'm so nostalgic, and the world of my current incarnation is just too frustrating... but at least it's getting better lately with the beautiful boys making a return X3

True that these text are historically correct and edited by professors and masterful historians. That's why I can rely on this information ^^

About ottomans ... you can find more typing "ottoman homoerotic" and this will give a lot more information bu there is no certain work that would collect all about it. Ypou might read this also.
Also the Islamic Iberia (Spain) has a lot related .

I see. Well, on the Middle east not all boys ad young men were prostitutes (it is perhaps a modern homophobia makes people believe it).
Many young men were respected class: from army commanders to wealthy courtiers and sultan's pages, they had SO MANY professions.

While the prostitution... if we take it in a bold meaning - it's kind of low. Surely it existed in Persia and Arabia and was prevailing compared to heterosexuality but that was for the low class people who wanted to earn money or just to satisfy their lusts.
If you mean by boys who like to change partners and are free in sex life. There were other types of boys who "entertained" men with their dancing music and singing (like koceks - dancing males) BUT they were normally respected just as actors and dancers nowadays and their 'selling of body' was not so rough and straight, they were more like 'geishas' in Japan and even if they had changed partners it was their private business.

But that was just a part f society. While other rest of boys choose to be honorary types and living happily with their male lovers like husbands, that was quite okay and they even could swear and promise faithfulness to each other (yeah there was jealousy among them), so I would emphasis the fact of love rather than just sex. They all needed love. I respect that for most of all because they were not ashamed to love -- they had the right love :3

You know, I was reading about this kinds of topics in Hindu mythology so I stumbled upon Mitra-Varuna, which seemed kind of cute to me that they were always (or mostly, I didn't read the entire article) depicted together and your drawing just makes me... BOOM... explode!! Haha, it's beautiful...
... I also stumbled upon the myth of Agnis, which is kind of... shocking to me (I'm a Catholic and to us, everything is scandalizing... nah, I'm just kidding)
Well, sorry I'm rambling.
You are a great artist. Bye!

Many people don't know about such relationships or either not interested, or even try to hide it
Some vedic myths are quite bizzare, especially those stories that twisted into the folk tales of hindu. But Mitra-Varuna are perhaps one of the earliest and realiest Indo-Aryan couple of gods :3
Nevermind, and thanks!)
