Description

This idea came to me a long time ago, more than a year ago. The image of the Archangel suddenly flashed in my head just like that, I did not even know why, but, then I realized later. I immediately sketched this image. Snow-white skin, platinum hair, gold armor and bright, like clean blue clothes, an inexpressible look and a hand stretched out with sword. The dreary mood of the sunset was instantly scattered by the fresh brightness and light of the Archangel; the defender of the righteous and suffering. Then I dreamed a dream, where I saw the image of Michael in the form of black and white engraving, around his halo, the words in Latin - Quis ut Deus - "Who is like God".

He is one of my favorite Angels, I read a lot about him and studied him, as well as about Gabriel and Lucifer. If Lucifer simply knocks down his power and charisma, then Michael has a soft, more subtle and imperceptible power that, if opened, penetrates into the depths of the heart. This divine archetype of Charity, which exists in all world teachings; the thousand-eyed Indo-Iranian Mithra is a deity of friendship, justice and kindness; the thousand-eyed Avalokitesvara, a bodhisattva of infinite mercy and compassion in Buddhism, and of course Michael is an archangel with 70 thousand eyes, ceaselessly mourning the sins and sufferings of people, and a new Angel of Mercy is born from every Michael's tear. In the old paintings, you can see how thousands of Michael's eyes were portrayed in the form of peacock feathers on his wings. The same archetype we can see in Melek Tause - Angel Peacock, the head of the archangels of the Yezidis, who mourning the sufferings of sinners, and thereby extinguishing the flames of hell with his tears.

The Holy Prophet Daniel was a descendant of a noble Jewish family. The name "Daniel" in translation from the Hebrew means - God is my judge.
His story is unusual and to some extent unique. His meetings with the Angels are amazing, and shed light on the nature of these heavenly mysterious forces. The picture shows the moment when the beautiful prophet Daniel, thrown into the moat with lions, depressed and unfairly slandered by evil tongues, suddenly saw a wonderful phenomenon - a radiant man with a sword that protected him from hostile forces.
The fact that Daniel is the only prophet who was a eunuch is interesting. According by the sources, he was of outstanding beauty, meekness and intelligence.
In addition to Michael, the prophet Daniel was twice visited by the Archangel Gabriel, helping him to work on his prophetic book.
***
"The subtle element of fire is associated with Archangel Michael. The pure bluish colour one sees in the fire is His colour too. Nothing can corrupt fire, but fire symbolizes the physical pristine presence of the non corruptible and thus, a glimpse of The Lord’s love, warmth, purity and divinity.
This Divine Fire burns away all that which is not real, all that which is not permanent; leaving the glow of Divine Radiance which is true, life nurturing and eternal.

Saint Francis of Assisi truly sums up the magnificence of Archangel Michael. He loved Saint Michael as He referred the Archangel as a Saint and felt deeply that one and all should praise and honour Archangel Michael as He truly wanted all to be on the side of God and because His duty was to present souls to God. In the words of Saint Francis: "Each person should offer God some special praise or gift in honour of such a great Prince".
Saint Francis would fast for nearly forty days from the feast of the Assumption (August 15th ) to Saint Michael's feast day on September 29th, in love and honour of Archangel Michael."  (Archangel Michael - The protector and commander of the army of Gods by Ruzbeh Bharucha)

The fact that Daniel was a eunuch writes here.

"Some believe that Daniel was a eunuch which was a procedure that was required for those serving in the king’s court. According to what I’ve found I do not know of a passage of scripture that specifically states that Daniel was a eunuch, there is strong evidence to believe so. The prophesy of Isaiah concerning the fall to Babylon (chapter 39:7 in particular), speaks of the young men of Judah being taken away and made "eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon".
This prophesy took place during the younger years of Daniels life. (Daniel 1:1 and following), state that Daniel was among those brought to Babylon (verse 6 in particular). Also, we see that Daniel was placed under the charge of Ashpenaz, master of the eunuchs. The fact that Daniel rose to such a high position of authority under the rules of Nebuchadnezzar and Darius, almost certainly confirms that Daniel was made a eunuch, common practice in biblical days to prevent any offspring being born to anyone who might challenge the throne."

Do you think it’s possible that Saint Francis was castrated or at least damaged while he was in prison as a hostage, and his father kept it a secret?

Some sources do state that like St. Origen the St. Francis were self-imposed eunuchs. I'm not very familiar and you can search the works maybe : )

Hmm, Innocent 3rd would not have taken him seriously if he had harmed himself deliberately. The Cathars had made him very wary of “Fanatics”. Given his macho gusto as a young knight and troubadour prior to his imprisonment, if it happened that seems the most likely time. It is said that whenever a fellow prisoner was scheduled for torture for misbehaving, he would always volunteer to endure it in his stead. He may have endured, if not outright castration than at least severe damage down there on behalf of a friend.
As for later Franciscans, I wouldn’t be surprised. Don Scotus in particular is suspect to me, among the well known. Lowlanders never did anything by halves.

Thank you! St. Michael is one of my favorite Archangels. He is a very ancient and deep character. Jews worshiped him as a God (he was named Mihr, Mithra or Beshter) even before the advent of Judaism. When the Abraamist religions came, the Jews could not reject Michael and made him the chief Archangel of God.

Explains the origin of the Angel myths - Angels are basically former gods who became loyal to the only God.

Those wings are amazing. I don't think I've ever seen a design like that with the peacock eyes in the middle.

Thank you! Daniel is really wonderful example of dedication and nobility. I'm not a Christian, but I think that to love God, angels and respect the prophets is not necessarily to be someone. But to have patience and diligence in a pure heart is necessary.

Daniel looks so sweet here! And you paint the angels so beautifully! This is one of the most beautiful depictions of Saint Michael that I've ever seen.

Great work, both on the painting and your research! It was a very interesting read.
