Description I have been going back in time and re-inking some of my previous work to see the difference in my style due to experience.
~bathill8 Bat was one of my favourite pencilers who let me practice over his lines back when I first started inking in....2008! So as I was poking around my folders I thought I would do a quick ink tonight over this sketch of his...

So...just for no real reason than to see how I handle Bat's lines now...Interesting to see the changes I think.

Left side, Wonder girl... today, .3 Staedtler pen-- Right, Superman... 2008, brush pen.

I'm learning each time I work over lines...have come a long ways, and still have so much more to learn!

Oh yeah I see a difference between the too and like the new style which makes me wonder what I will do when I get back to the United States. Great inks by the way and keep up the good work.

It's just about continuos practice! Back then I was just throwing myself in, not really sure what I was doing. Now I'm applying the things I've learned and picked up over the last couple years. I'm way more confident, and still learning everyday!

Lol, I would never hate you! I wasn't familiar with his work, but looked him up...ya, a similar vibe.
I'm enjoying seeing and comparing how I ink versus my early days. Trying to figure out what defines my style and where it is going.

well it is awesome! both has their advantages.. i mean brush pen has that feeling great for outlines then again finesse of a .3 pen has more use around female characters and face

depends too how big the image you are inking but nevertheless it looks amazing and great job inking! you should try a full scaled page! comics scouters always want to see your ability to ink a whole page

Nice!

A critique: increase the depth of the lines of the upper eyelids and lips. It'll make the expressions pop as much as the pencils had.

Glad to be of service-- I see a lot of upcoming inkers make the same mistake, and someone should be making that one of the MUST-KNOW bullet points.

Honestly? I would consider looking for work with guys like Top Cow and Dark Horse as well as the Big 2. Tim was the reason for my exposure to editors at DC and Marvel, and I lucked out with the assignment I got. But I know the other 2 companies were when I last checked open for new talent.

And after seeing your inks on Joe Benitez, I'm convinced you should be working at Top Cow. It very much suits the style.

It's very naive for you to think Top Cow and Dark Horse don't have editors. Hell, since Dark Horse mostly prints licensed comics now, they are MORE editorially-mandated than DC or Marvel since they have to look for the interests of the franchise owners.

If you want to suggest an "out-there" company, may I suggest Image Comics? Image Comics did great with "Spawn" and "Savage Dragon", and they are the least editorially-controlled company of the "big name" companies. I'd love to see devgear draw my beloved Battle Girl in a comic.

I don't think Joe was suggesting they don't have editors, rather, they are open to submissions...which will obviously be reviewed by their editors. Ive just been checking their site now.

GokuMartin In reply to devgear [2012-02-02 11:36:18 +0000 UTC]

It's just that:

a-You have already shown to have a knack for drawing DC characters with these drawings.

b-If you work for DC (or Marvel), your work will gain greater exposure. Editors or not, think about how many people read DC comics (or Marvel comics) compared to how many people read Top Cow or Dark Horse. Hell, I can't even name a single Top Cow character other than Witchblade, and Dark Horse has long since jumpred ship on creating popular characters.

DC and Marvel are more popular, therefore you work will gain greater exposure if you go work for them, regardless of the presence of editors.

JosephLSilver In reply to GokuMartin [2012-02-02 11:28:13 +0000 UTC]

That's rather naive of you to say. I've spoken to editors from both companies, and while there isn't as much work to be had for numerous reasons, it never stops either company from pursuing talent. And those are just 2 companies out of a pool of independent companies to look into.

You want realistic? Think about how many submissions both DC and Marvel get on a regular basis, how difficult the process of presenting your portfolio has become over the years, and how many other talents are looking to get the spot you want.

At no point have I said that he shouldn't look for work at DC or Marvel and I certainly wish him well doing it, along with a lot of other inkers here on DA whose work I appreciate. But narrowing your pool to those companies is counterproductive and the contacts you maintain even if you don't land work at companies are priceless in value as it applies to future work.

Looking at the interest of the franchise owners also does not take away the editor's ability to hire talent, it simply narrows. This is why it is so important for inkers especially to be versatile enough to handle as many differing styles as possible.
