a closed species is a species someone designs , and they claim the 'rights' to that species
whereas they are the only ones who can make designs in that species (adoptables, customs), or give permission to others to make designs for that species!
some i know of are booze sharks, skulleids, and brew beasts! but lots and lots of people make closed species on deviantart, you've definitely seen them around
