This is such a wonderful shot. I've tried taking pictures of butterflies and it's so hard to get a shot while they are sitting still. Of course, my camera only has auto-focus so it sucks. Lorraine says that she will buy me a Cannon Rebel as a wedding gift. It will be so nice to have a real SLR again!

yes - I'm happy for you for that - manual focus is key for close ups!

Well, I cut my photography teeth on SLRs, first a Yashika, and then an Olympus OM1, which was a serious professional camera back in 1980. It was totally and completely manual. The only high tech thing it had was a light meter that was a little needle that went up and down. When it was in the middle, you were good.
No point and shoot. I loved it and miss it terribly, but I just couldn't justify the cost of film and development once digital took over.

Wonderful capture......it is a Variegated Fritillary. You'll wish up a Monarch one of these days.

thank you - just hanging out for a while in the garden you relax and get your settings right and focus and whatever comes in your focus you win - i am just lucky we have a *ton* of butterflies and moths this spring in Texas - it's nuts in my yard!

My yard's the same way with hummingbirds! They come out of nowhere and sometimes watch you a bit. I've seen some pretty cool ones- too bad I don't have a camera X-x
