Description It is one of my favorite Disney movies and as such  the comparison will be fun !

Both stories contain poor people , wish-fulfilling Genies, treacherous assholes and princesses that may be worth being decapitated for !

The Narrator

Disney Version : Alternatively the funniest and most threatening salesman you'll ever see. Promotes various objects , including the most fragile french fries maker, before grabbing our attention with a special oil lamp.

Book Version : The sexiest of the vizir's daughters ever ! Manages to cure King Shahriyar's douchebaggery  (which compels him to kill his wives) by telling him the 1001 tales ! Did I mention that she's awesome ?

Aladdin

Disney Version : A street-wise orphan who has to steal to survive in the streets of Agrabah with Abu ,his monkey. Is altruistic and helpful to more miserable than him and teaches us how to properly evade guards and steal watermelons. Has a keen gift for manipulation .

Book Version : A Chinese slacker (yup, the story takes place in a China imagined by Shahrazad !Go figure..) whose laziness killed his dad ... by shame (jeesh man ! get a grip !). His mom does everything so that they can have something to eat (such a strong-willed woman !) and Al , showing that he does have a heart , will use hi first wish so that they become rich and well-fed ( Not original, but let's be honest, anyone would start with financial security !).

The Genie

Disney Version : Is AWESOMENESS INCARNATE ! Has the fantastic voices of Robin Williams and Richard Darbois, appears when Aladdin rubs the magic lamp and steals the oddamn show anytime ! Will grant  three wishes with 3 restrictions : He can't kill (no problem , I'll settle for giving quadruplegia or Cenobitian torture instead !), make someone fall in love (If they can't love me, I'll refer you to my first wish !), or bring people back from the dead (but immortality or giving me a body as perfect as Cell's is not out of the question ? Good to know !). Is also best pals with the most amazing and underrated carpet of all time !

Book Version : There are Jinns here: onein a ring and the other in a lamp. They are basically Final Fantasy invocations but did not state any limit to wishes EXCEPT for stealing a Roc's egg ! They apparantly are hardcore bird lovers !

The Evil Guy

Disney Version : Jafar ! One of the greatest Disney villains ever ! He is the royal vizir, he is tall, dark and talks with the second sexiest voice in animation since he is acted by the french voice of Dr House.Gave his trusty parrot sidekick, Iago, the voice of Gilbert Gottfried and if that was not cool enough , manages to turn into one badass cobra !

Book version : There are 2 antagonists, the foreign magician and his brother, other foreign magician. They are every bit as stock as you'd think they are .

The Princess

Disney Version : The rebellious and quick-witted daughter of the sultan, Jasmine has apparantly rejected most suitor on the basis that they were pretentious and despicable assholes and because she only wants to marry for love ( LOVE AIN'T PART OF THE BIG PICTURE ! Sorry , it has nothing to do with anything  I just had to type that XD ...). Has a loyal tiger named Raja, who's the 3rd coolest Disney tiger after Shere Kahn and the one that Goofy was hunting, and the gift of judging people for their actual worth.

Book version : Princess Badr-al-Budur, meaning “full moon of full moons” ( if you have a joke about moons you can go ahead !). Is okay with marrying whoever. While not exactly the sharpest of minds , she can act convincingly enough like an escort girl to poison the villain of our happy piece. To be fair though, Aladdin should have told her about the damn lamp !

The Sultan

Disney Version : Why isn't there a plushie of the Sultan already ? He's the cutest thing ever ! I guess cuteness does help you getting busy ... duly noted !

Book version : The picture speaks for itself.

So there you go ! Disney's mesage ? Inner worth is the most impotant thing you'll ever have ! Original tale 's message ? Cash makes the man ! (properly planned assassination does that too !)

How could his "laziness" have killed his dad?

Yeah, rebellious and quick-witted, until she meets him and that's when all that changes for good.

The power of shame ! Back in those days, it was lethal !

I don't know, she still ends up making him admit that he was Aladdin the street rat all along...

The reason why I like the Disney versions is:

The genie, because he's crazy and funny, even under serious circumstances. And iago for his sarcasm.

It always depends on the stories. They improve on some or give a hilarious take on ( Hercules OR any Donald/Mickey comic that spoofs a literary classic...) but some can be botched...

Maybe he's a chinese that speaks arabic. I know that's a stretch but bear in mind that Sheherazade made the story as she went along .

YES! That's what I've been waiting for! I love this comparison!

By the way, I didn't know the original story had two villains. Go figure. O_O

Dude, I am honored you enjoyed this comparison !

Well they were both so similar that some retellings make them the same dude ...

As it happens, Disney's "Aladdin" is one of my favorite Disney films too. I'm also rather fond of the two movies and cartoon series that followed after.

It's certainly not the most loyal to the original tale, but then what Disney movie is?

Well, Revisions can be beneficial . And Yes, Aladdin as a whole kicked ass !
Snow White is what I'd call the most faithful and surprisingly... I took it more seriously than the original because the cannibalistic Evil Queen is goofy while the Disney one is genuinely cold and scary.

Wow, I didn't know the queen in the original story was a cannibal, but I suppose that makes sense. It would tie her to a real-life infamous female figure from history; Elizabeth Bathory...although Bathory was more of a vampire than a cannibal.

One of the many non-Marvel things worth looking forward to with Disney Infinity 2.0 is the addition of Aladdin and Jasmine as player characters!  Some people dog on Disney for adapting myths and folk tales into unique stories, but I say they can keep doing it if they keep churning out good stories like this one.

I dog on Disney for not adapting their comics in animation ! And the Little Mermaid... and Sleeping Beauty... Damn these 2 movies sucked !

Aladdin was my favorite Disney movie ever, period. I don't watch animated movies anymore, Disney or not, but from what I see or read about them on the net they pale in comparison to such classics!
