Description
Just because I am, like many of you, indebted to Walt in a way or another. He had not only started what would impact american culture but would also be known worldwide ! Yes I am well aware of the guy's flaws or ego (though I don't hold it against him
Yeah , I am well aware of his hatred of unions, tight grip on the animators' creative experiments, and the fact that a lot of his employees called him " The Big Bad Walt " XD .
But he was also a genius that gave us several masterpieces during his lifetime to enjoy and love , whether you're a kid or an adult ! AND HE TOOK RISKS, the most memorable one is that he decided that short cartoons weren't enough and that he would make a feature-length film (the first one being Snow White ... and the gamble worked!). Bear in mind that he was near-bankrupt more often than not during his lifetime until he reached stability in the 50's.
Now while I am grateful for the princesses and the fairy tales ,I am more a fan of Disney comics (that should be ANIMATED ! Yes you'll hear that a lot ...) . And yes , Walter Elias Disney was barely in it as he only co-wrote the first story. To me , Disney's biggest gift is that he had 2 good ideas:
1) The idea of the mouse guy in red shorts with gold buttons with big ears and his pal the pantless duck in a sailor suit (a thousand thanks to Clarence Nash ...)
2) The excellent idea to hand them to the RIGHT creative people both in animation (King, Kinney, Thomson...) and in comics ( Floyd Gottfredson, Al Taliaferro, Carl Barks, Bob Karp ...). Of course you know that these people are my heroes for creating the TRUE Disney universe !
So I will always remember him as the guy who got the ball rolling ... and that is something to be admired .
And hey , a little top 10. The best Disney features made DURING his lifetime:
10) Cinderella (1950)
9) Three Caballeros (1944)
8) Ichabod and Mr Toad (1949)
7) Fantasia (1941)
6) Dumbo (1941)
5) Fun and fancy free (1941)
4) Pinocchio (1940)
3)Alice in Wonderland (1951)
2) Saludos Amigos (1942)
1) Snow White (1937)
Yeah , I guess I was more of a fan of the renaissance Disney movies , like many of you !

Thanks to Walt Disney, besides Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Oswald and Friends, we currently have a wonderful world of animation as his legacy. And indirectly, he inspired other studios (like Warner Bros., Universal, Columbia and MGM) to follow similar directions.

Meryl Streep recently called Walt Disney a sexist, racist, anti-Semite at the Oscars. Anyone who has read about Walt Disney knows those things aren't true. Floyd Norman responded in his blog by pointing out women, blacks, and Jews Walt hired at the studio. Showing Meryl Streep's ignorance. He may not have been the easiest guy to work for, but I sometimes think animators exaggerate how bad he was. One guy, can't remember his name, claimed that the animators were the real geniuses and Walt was nothing. Forgetting that without Walt the guy wouldn't have a job. Guys like that make me think some employees just have sour grapes. Glad you included Oswald. I was happy when Disney got him back.

Exactly. Walt Disney might not have the full-blown Β artistic vision his collaborators had , but people like Gottfredson and Barks had lots of respect for him ! To me, Walt's biggest talent was that he knew how to surround himself with great talents and how to lead the boat !

Well said, and let's not forget that Walt Disney's right-hand man, Joe Grant was Jewish! By the way, are you going to make a picture for him or the Nine Old Men?

Actually , no. The guy does have his flaws (especially AGAINST unions...) but I think he's been given much more crap than there is actually. Not to mention that several of his employeesΒ who knew and worked under Walt refute the notion that he was an anti-Semite. You could say that the golden rule is to work very freaking hard. Also, while he was a very strict boss, he actually did not mind that artists (such as Barks or Gottfredson ) would sign their works by their own name, but the publishing houses like Dell and King Features Syndicate found the name Disney better for sales

Oh. I actually heard about his "Anti-Semitism" was from some Family Guy episode where Walt Disney awakens from his cryogenic sleep and asks if Jews still exist. When this is Confirmed yes, he goes back to sleep.

A teacher at my old college told us a funny story about him once... he kept making an employee redraw a pose for a character because it wasn't 'exaggerated enough'. Finally the artist got so mad he draw the pose extremely over the top just to piss Walt off. When he brought it in, Walt looked at it, then looked at him and said, "Why didn't you just do it like that to start with?"
God, I love that story!
