Description
In preparation for the coming of Iron Man in this here gallery (not the movie, the superior one few care about...), here's my review of said movie trilogy in one drawing... because why bother typing a "War and Peace" book when a simple gesture suffices. And yes, Ragnarok was a disappointment. Why do you ask ?

In my opinion, the MCU should have two Justin Hammers, a cold, ruthless, intelligent father and a dopey, jokey, way-in-over-his-head son to better contrast between them and how they relate as evil counterparts to Tony and Howard Stark. Charles Dance could be Hammer Sr while Hammer Jr could still be played by Sam Rockwell.
Hammer Sr could realize what Ivan Vanko could be up to and manipulates him in return to get himself killed in order to procure his armor technology for someone more loyal to his own plans.

It would be a great concept for a story in which these three team up to defeat Iron Man. Albeit... I think it would be hard for Obadiah Stane to do anything with most of his head being blown off.

*IM1: Mah boi Jeff Bridges, that´s how you do Marvel bad guys. He was so evil and treacherous, while looking like he had the time of his life. He mangaed to be a balanced mix of over the top and dignified restrained. You kinda knew from the start that he was not a good guy, but still you could see how more jerkish Tony worked so well with him.
*IM2: To quote Confused Matt: "Is this Hammer guy in-universe supposed to be retarded?" Another sad case of hacks thinking of themselves as brilliant when they turn an intimidating antagonist into a laughing stock. "Get it, our militaries contractors just produce garbage! Such a smart commentary!" "Get it, that clown wants to be just like Tony! So funny!"
Also, you had this set-up of Tony having a real character arc, of coming to terms with the fact that his good old daddy was a cut-throat and a liar. Buuut, nope, of course Howard Stark was saint and that Russian guy just got it all wrong, making him one of the most pointless antagonists in the MCU.
*IM3: We talked about this elsewhere. In retrospect, it´s the same problem as with IM2: Grabbing for cheap laughs and super important political comments, while pissing all over the source material. It´s not only about the Mandarin, but also about AIM. Each of their own is a power to take on the Avengers. But of course its way better to change them into some dolt actor and a generic evil corporation lead by a disgruntled geek, who in the end injects himself with the same crap as his mooks that Tony already butchered en masse...how scary

I agree with these badass Iron Villains.
The first movie was great, and two movies are pretty shitty.

And it's not like there was a shortage of material for a fantastic trilogy ... Of Steel and Blood

Yeah, the first one was good, nothing special but good (I still think the Incredible Hulk movie was much better honestly)
The second one... this is why I preffer to read the comic book story after watching the movie (it was such a big mistake to read "The Demon in the bottle" before the movie)
The third one...like casting Marissa Tomei as AUnt May, I don't get the Mandarin ending or want to hear their reasons, there is no way I can respect it.
I haven't seen Thor Ragnarok

Ah the Incredible Hulk ! Norton was a fantastic Banner... I wish they adapted the Leader and then closed the trilogy with the Maestro. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be...
Oh the second fucks up waaay beyond "Demon In a Bottle": Mickey Rourke's character could have led to an interesting story that has Tony confront his corrupt inheritance. Remember, unlike Tony, Howard Stark is NOT a good person ! So I totally see him send Anton Venko to the gulag leading to Rourke's anger ! Also, while Sam Rockwell is a good actor, he is NOT fitting for Justin Hammer. Someone like Charles Dance should have been selected ! And the unfunny jokes...and Scar Jo's blandness...
Their reason is simple: they want a cutting edge commentary on terrorism or what the fuck else... because the badass second coming of Genghis Khan is not good enough I suppose. Fuck having THIS 2.bp.blogspot.com/SR6zD0SVVkwO… on-screen.

No, it wasn't
I don't know very much about Howard Stark aside from his appearances in the 90s cartoon and that time he teamed up with Nathaniel Richards. I want to believe it was just the script that made Hammer suck.
That page, from what comic is from?

It's from the mini-series "Enter The Mandarin" by Joe Casey. I gotta hand it to Joe, dude is on the money most of the time.

I was about to ask if this was a judgment to the movies as a whole or the way these characters were portrayed in them but I suppose it makes little difference if it's the same answer to both questions. And I suppose it was a good thing they gave Stane a beard as he looks way too much like Lex Luthor without it.
I guess Mandarin is not a smoker. Not even one of those long Chinese pipes?

It is for both. The first one was excellent and though it did not include Obadiah's obsession for chess games (that's how he sees life...) but his ruthlessness and treachery were spot-on. The second one could easily have been fantastic if they actually shown Ivan's father as the good man who Howard Stark betrayed (unlike Tony, Howard is a prick. Just because he fought Nazis doesn't make him any less of a colossal prick...) and had Charles Dance (the Tywin Lannister guy) portray Justin Hammer as the cunning karma houdini he ususally is since Mr Cushing left us (now I love Sam Rockwell but I'd rather see him as Spymaster OR as Cletus Kasady...). The third one...either adapt Haunted or the "For Happy's sake" story or "Enter the Mandarin", because as it is, it is trash.
Yeah, to differentiate them, I use Telly Savalas with added red eyebrows and clear eyes for Lex while I used a caricature of Jeff Bridges for Obbie (and yes, the beard totally suits him !).
Well he only smokes very occasionally so I forgot to add it XD. He is more addicted to taking walks in faraway mountains though...

It's Tales of Suspense 84-86. It's pretty touching since it focuses on Tony and Happy's friendship...

devilkais In reply to EternalCyclops [2017-11-19 22:01:17 +0000 UTC]
Well in bullet points ?
* The tone is so over the place, there was no friggin urgency... also, showing Surtur THAT early kind of diminishes the tension of the end of Asgard
* Odin's death ... way to make it utterly forgettable.
* Hela is basically treated like Singer treated Apocalypse.... only counted for 30%-40% of the movie. The whole Arena stuff ATE too much of the runtime.
* I am fucking tired of green pissy Hulk. Time to bring the OTHER personna of Banner (he's gray, he's mean, he's Mr Fixit !) for a change.
* I am tired of this Loki. Give me the insidious, cruel, fratricidal version any day
* No Beta Ray Bill...
Here's a video that covers the movie's problems www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxRKD0… . And bear in mind, I only read a handful of Thor stories and EVEN then the movie did not feel right to me !

I saw that video. I even left a few comments in there.
Admittedly, I haven't read much of Thor either (on his own, anyway). I've only read the Mutant Massacre Tie-Ins and the first arc of Jason Aaron's run on Thor, but I still like the Thunder God regardless. I did enjoy his first two movies as well.
I do need to read more of Loki and the Hulk. My only exposure to the God of Lies outside the movies is the first issue of Avengers (not counting Uncanny Avengers and Superior Spider-Man Team-Up, where he was impersonated by Kang and Chameleon respectively). As for the Hulk, the only Hulk book I've read is Incredible Hulk #450. Otherwise, my only exposure to the Hulk has been through the MCU (I'm glad Ragnarok finally let the big guy speak full sentences), Avengers, and Marvel Zombies.

The Iron Man movies? I pretty much share your opinion. The first one was good and entertaining, the second one was meh and the third one was abysmal and a snore-fest. Ugh. Just as bad as the second Ghost Rider movie. (I haven't seen the F4 movie that debuted about 2 years ago and never will but I bet that was even worse )
I haven't seen Ragnarok yet and I won't be able to before it comes out on DVD. Is it better than The Dark World at least, even if it's disappointing?

devilkais In reply to LadyMadCat [2017-11-19 22:15:41 +0000 UTC]
Yeah. Why do we want a trilogy that adapts the best parts of the comic in a coherent whole (Tony facing the corrupt actions of his dad in the 2nd movie then facing the Mandarin's insurrectionist conspiracies ... and having THIS as a middle movie fight www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eR8XZ… ... the final fight would be closer to the one in the MK movie. Then again, The Mandarin should have been played by Cary-Hyoruki Tagawa since he's basically anarchist Shang Tsung ...)
Funny , I haven't Dark World but I guess that and IM3 is where they really started getting lazy...

LadyMadCat In reply to devilkais [2017-11-21 17:41:07 +0000 UTC]
That's an interesting fan video, it's definitely got potential! I'm not well versed in comic book Iron Man or his rogue's gallery but I know the Mandarin's portrayal in IM3 was totally wrong! And that lame (literally) guy as the main villain, it was so disappointing.
Shang Tsung as the Mandarin? I'd like that
Well, you haven't missed much. After the first Thor movie, fans wanted to see more of Thor's entourage and less of the annoying human characters. And guess what we got instead - less of Thor's entourage and more of the annoying human characters! But this wasn't the only bad thing, there was a totally uninspired main villain, a not very memorable story and CGI/action sequences that were below the level of many previously made Marvel movies. It's a movie that's worth watching if, let's say, you happen upon it while channel surfing and you kinda watch it and sleep through parts of it.....I'd say it's like Wonder Woman in that regard (*prepares for the stones, eggs and tomatoes*), except Wonder Woman didn't have a bunch of annoying supporting characters
