Description *The light's go down and the curtains go up with the music as spotlight's pick out the three figures on stage, Marilyn Manson's mOBSCENE playing loudly*
Well, If you like several people on Deviant art have already seen the previous incarnations of this image, from pencil sketch to Inked artwork, you will probably understand what all of this is about. However, If your seeing this for the first time, your first instinct is probably to pick up the nearest heavy object and run at me screaming in a wave of red mist. Now why Is that I wonder?

Let me put it to you this way freind....

People complain about the most inane drivel.

Okay, heres the lowdown. You happen to like Uniforms, ie, military ones, and think they look very nice. You love the leather on a Gestapo trench coat, get off on the taboo in roleplay, or just like the Asthetics of the uniform's designs. However, say you like the look of a Gestapo officers uniform and religious fanatics and pressure groups flame the hell out of you. The same with people who innocently draw Catgirls, anthro characters, and other creatures, normally female, and normally attractive get quite a wave of hatred and bile thrown up against them. Nobody mentioned sex, but yup, the tiny minded idiots jump up and start berating these poor people, apparently on the grounds that because you draw animal's in the form of females, you want to commit Beastility. This is one of several childish and frankly irritating arguments which will probably go on until tyhe end of time.

The same arguments abound for people with their personal chopice of Lifestyle. By that of course I mean their sexual orientation. Gay, Straight, Bi Tai, I would like to know what possible difference it makes. There are places in the world where smae sex couples are attacked, hanged and worse, arguments for this including things such as the protection of 'decent folks' children. For one, I didnt realise Decvent Folks were allowed to do that sort of thing, and for another Im curious to see how being gay means your going after children. Does it mean that they paint gay and Lesbian couples with the same tar brush as Paedophiles? Wouldnt be suprised. Or perhaps they assume that if the children see people living happy normal lives with a partner of the same sex, they may realise that they could do the smae, but this of course would not be a happy state of mind for 4 hicks in a backwater desert town, so it's hangings and rape all round. Check out 'Boys Dont Cry' and you'll see what I mean.

And it's not just gay or Bi relationships which people protest about, it's also various other expressions of love. Roleplaying, S&M, Domination and Submission, Menag e trois, and hundreds of other various fetishes ond lifestyles, all of which are completly harmless and based around mutual consent, but still looked upon with hatred and acts of violence.

So, the point of this image is thus. What do you view as Obscene? And why? Ok, you may not be Gay, Like Anthro art, Have a thing for Nazi uniforms, have anything other than normal Vanilla sex, and spend your life in a nice normal way. Good for you. The fact of the matter is nobody walks up to people and pushes whatever personal preference lifestyle or obsession in the faces of passer by's, they do it with likeminded poeople, behind closed doors and dont in any way make out to bother people.
Perhaps Im loosing sight a bit here, but this image itself is not Pornographic. This image is trying to show you that the most innocent of things can be miscronstrewed into something wholly different from that which it is intended.

The point of the image is to deliberetly provoke people, to show them that they do have certain pre-conceptions and can get very strong reactions from something as innocent of a drawing, let alone a uniform, or a type of art. Uniforms, Anthro females, and various sexual fetishes and lifestyles are tackled in the image, all of which chosen to provoke the viewer into thinking about what they think is acceptable and why. To my mind there is not a single harmful element in the image. It is not Pornography, not in the slightest. All it does is casually suggest, and it is the viewer who put's things toghether in their own minds, not me. Wheter you hate Anthro artists, people who express their sexuality in unorthadox or open ways, bi or homosexual activity, or people who have a love of military regalia, you need to ask youself why, and lets face it, you better have a good argument, otherwise when you get right down to it, who are the ones being harmed, and who is really in the wrong?

I dont say that the guy in Uniform (myself) is a Nazi. I dont make any comments concerning their manifesto of hatred ond Racism. I dont say in any way that the creation Of RFurries and Lizard Females is in any way sexual or pornographic, let alone to do with Beastility. I dont in any way scream out that the two girl's are Lesbians, although the entwined tailes suggest it. I dont in any way say they are all in a multi-speciese Menage e Trois relationship, I dont say that the two girl's are his sex slaves, I dont say any of that.

Only the people who look at the image and make those connections in their own minds do, and let's face it, if you jump to those sort's of conclusions from Deliberetly innocent images, what does that say about you?

I personally find the Nazi uniforms to look pretty good (the SS uniforms were designed by Hugo Boss).
The problem I have is when people leave comments such as one that claimed the poster wanted to go back in time and snag a Nazi husband.
The Nazis were more than just cool uniforms--they were an evil organization, and this fact should be addressed.

Indeed, it is only a matter of opinion.

I personally love uniforms and symbols, not necessarily in a sexual manner(unlike some who do), I just like they way they look. For example the SS, even when watching some obviously anti-nazi movies, I can't help but stare at the uniforms.

If it wasn't for what people would associate me with, I'd probably want to wear one everyday(Let's face it, their designer was a genius).

Amen to all of that! Couldn't have put it any better myself. It's nice when people finally put their foot down and stand up for their beliefs. It'd be so much simplier and kinder if people would realise their one-track mind sets and just accepted these things in life. I really hope people don't think that by killing, insulting, etc. gays it will stop Homosexuality, or those who draw Furries/Anthro and are chastised constantly. It's more trouble then it's worth for them really. Many of my friends are either Homo or Bisexual and I support each and everyone of them.

I happen to be Bisexual, and I don't give a DAMN what people think about me. If they hate it, then that's their opinion. If they tell me to change, then screw them. If I wanna dress like a freak, I can dress like a freak. Same thing as wanting Nazi rifles and pistols. If they think I'm a Nazi for wanting their weapons, just because they look awesome and were the precursors of many of OUR weapons, then they can go do whatever they want. It's all a matter of opinion.

It's unfortunate ,I suppose, but I like to keep my mind closed then open it up just every once in a while. We need more rants like that in most of the artwork that's considered "unnatural".

People think of others as "freaks" just because they enjoy something different. I view the world the same way as you: most people being idiots and not accepting the fact that there is no such thing as a right or a wrong. But, due to society being so influenced by judgement and religion, think anything having to relate with a different sexuality, a couple of strange fetishes, a fondness to furry anthro characters, a liking to Hitler's fashion, or some other random crap is just plain bad. You can blame whatever fits your needs. I mostly think the base of this problem was from Christian traditions. Apparently, yaoi is a sin to "God". Now watch as I make this statement a contradiction. If God loves "his children", how come some of his children won't be accepted into his kingdom just for loving the same sex? How come they'll be sent to Hell just for liking the Schutzstaffel outfit? I wish I could just rant about this all day one day on national television. Buuut... I'm 14, and most people have really thick skulls. =_=

By the way, nice pic. Torment the fools, no?

I cant agree with the way you compare homosexuality to a fetish in your rant. Being gay isnt a choice its the way a person is your born, there is no choice period. Not that Im saying having a fetish for such things (be it Nazi uniforms or furries) is wrong, as long its not hurting anyone I wont condemn it even if dont always agree with it.

I think you're absolutely right about people letting their personal beliefs color their views on art. You are also right to seek a response through your art. However, putting nazi uniforms in the same category as catgirls and yaoi seems like a bit of a stretch. I certainly hope you were sincere when you stated that you wanted to provoke thoughtful responses in people. If not, please feel free to stop reading now. If you continue to read, I hope that you will take this response in the spirit it was offered (read: as an invitation to intelligent discussion rather than a personal attack).

I don't think it's the actual form and fabric of the uniforms that's the problem, per se. I think it's more that in most of the (for lack of a better term) "I love nazi uniforms" art there's a disturbing trend of aesthetic (and, often, sex) appeal outweighing some truly horrific associations. Since the point of uniforms, as far as I can tell, is to align oneself with a group and its beliefs, it's hardly surprising that art featuring "cool" (in quotations because of its subjective nature) or widely liked characters in nazi uniforms draws negative responses, especially when it is clear that the artist admires the character depicted. Really, it is a deeply troubling cultural phenomenon.

There's also the dimension of the original goals behind the design of nazi imagery. Yes, it is inspiring. Yes, it is powerful. Yes, it is seductive. Yes, it brings to mind the taboo of sado masochism. Yes, it looks cool. All of these things, perhaps even the s/m element, had a large role in how the third reich was able to recruit so many people for its army. Though I am by no means a trained psychologist, I feel pretty secure in the idea that the authoritarian nature of Nazi propaganda and uniform design didn't exactly hinder Hitler's goal of brainwashing his troops.

The reason then, that I, and probably many other people, find art celebrating Nazi uniforms disturbing is that it demonstrates the continued power and influence of the regime that thought them up in the first place. I.E.: The uniforms were designed to attract, and they are still doing so. It is a chilling thought that the word "Nazi" could come to be synonymous with "fashionable."

Given all of this, I do not think it is accurate to imply that responding negatively to this trend in art is symptomatic of a failure to think about the work at hand. Granted, there are people that go to far and hypocritically resort to the kind closed-mindedness and hatred that they intend to condemn. That doesn't necessarily mean, however, that their knee-jerk reaction would not translate into a logical and valid response.

Indeed, I really have to wonder how many "cool/sexy nazi uniform" works of art there would be if artists sat down and seriously thought about what those uniforms mean in a historical and cultural context; looked at pictures of holocaust victims; reread books written by holocaust survivors. Is it really fair to imply that people who automatically flame these pictures are the *only* ones with "certain pre-conceptions and...very strong reactions" to this subject?

Well, cant argue with that. I do understand about how folks feel about the history of REAL Horror that occured and thats connected to the uniforms, and also the current day groups who promote that kind of twisted world view. In all honesty this was created a few years back as a bit of sly fun to provoke people, and Im amazed that after all these years its STILL getting such feedback and discussion.
