Next of the Alien Beasts. Took a hot minute to get done if you compare the dates. But its done.

I don't remember the prompt but I did have the idea to have butterfly wings as replacement for the mane. I thought it be very cool and thus I went with more insect theme. I didn't quite get the look I wanted but its still cool. Anyway about these guys.

I get the feeling these guys live in flooded planet with land being heavy forest, think mangrove swamp. They aren't very big and spent most time in trees and then come down and forage when tides out. The males have their territories and use dispaly to scare off predators and rivals with their dazzling "manes". They can be visious when that doesn't work. These lot are mostly omniviorous, eating plant, usually sap, fruit and nectar, and animal matter, small animals as they are too delicate for big prey. They use antenna to locate prey, test food and to tell movements of the water. Movement happens in low tide when females will travel between islands that males occupy, males without territory trying to find unclaimed locations. Males and females feed at low tide, along with breeding happening at this time, and then retreat to trees when tide comes in. The male has breeding over any females in the territory, her coming into heat every three months of the year. The female will gestate offspring for three months before releasing the small lava staged indivduals out into deeper water. This takes great efforts so constant food source and rest is needed. Some females will even die from the trip out to deeper waters from exhastion or predation. The larva state will remain in the waters growing fro the first three years before leavingu upon growing in size enough to join the adulst inland. Both are mature enough to breed but avoid it as they are still too small to take part. upon finding a place the cycle repeats. They will on average live 6 years in total.
