A last minute entry for Rinja's cover contest [link] . Yeah, unlike my last cover for rinja (The Lion Queen TotH [link] ) this one sucks on so many levels; mostly because I ran out of time. I had this all rough drafted and scanned weeks ago but due to school, never got around to getting in to finish it until this week. So its rushed and sloppy, with none of the characters colored or shaded. But hey, Rinja said that it wasn't so much about artist ability as it was about creating a cover that illustrated her story(s) effectively. So I just focused on getting the entry done and making a "effective" illustration of her Requiem. (FYI, I do plan on going back and colorin, shading and editing the characters, but I'll likely do so later ).
Anyway about the piece. Rinja's story Simba's Pride Requiem takes the second lion king movie but adds her own "unique" twists at the story. So I tried to keep true to that vision. I added the "sunset" sky plus images of the characters of the movie and priderock in connection to the old movie posters I use to see when the movie first came out. But then I added a more conflicting tone with a "dividing line" and placing the characters on opposite sides with sorrowful or threatening looks. The side that is barren and desert like is the side of ruin and war while the side with the green fields is the side of prosperity and peace. I placed the characters according to what I believed the character was contributing the most to.
On side of ruin (top to bottom)
1. Zira (villain of the movie that caused everyone pain)
2. Shenzi (wanted revenge against Simba and the royal family)
3. Chaka (manipulated by the hyena as a tool to split the families apart)
4. Nuka (ultimately lead to many of the tragedies and suffering that occurred on both sides)

On the side of prosperity (top to bottom)
1. Kopa (brought the final act of peace upon the lands)
2. Asante (ended the war between hyena and lion)
3. Timira (secretly and bravely worked towards changing Chaka so as to stop a civil war)
4. Vitani/Shani (let go of her grief and past prejudice to bring peace between the families)

Kovu and Kiara, the ones at the bottom, aren't on either side because they both attempted to heal the rift but also played a role in rekindling the flames of war. Plus, they are the main characters in the movie . I wanted to put Simba in there but I simply couldn't figure out where to place him so he was left out .
Also note that each character has a counter part that represents there conflicting personality/ideals or may represent a love interest of some kind .
The final touch was to give a catch phrase or teaser to the story. But sense I couldn't come up with anything clever that was short, I took a quote from Shakespear's Romeo and Juliet (the play the movie was based off of) and placed it in the middle. The quote is taken from the beginning and ending of the play and best elaborates Rinja's story without giving too much away. Plus, a little classical literature is fun to do.
I did change one thing and that was the ". . . are fair Vernoa . . ." line to ". . . are fair Pridelands. . ." so as to fit with the story better.

Well, I think that's everything. Now, onward to requests.
