Description

He had remained in isolation for the last three days or so, taking up living in the dark, dank basement and refusing to leave. He never ate any of the meals Kyon brought to the edge of the stairs (never able to go further before he’d give off menacing growls in warning), didn’t make a ounce of sound while down there and seemed to not even care enough to move to the more comfortable futon then sleep on the hard concrete floor. No verbal prompt from his Tamer seemed to change his mind and he became alight with electric charge the minute she came too close.  It was very alarming to say the least and Kyon was at a complete loss at what to do.
Jack personally cared little for the troll, he’d be happy to see the jerk continue to despair till death claimed him. But he did care for his Tamer and seeing her racked with worry over the prickly beast was torture for the Woozle. He knew that if Critiquill did up and die on them, Kyon would be inconsolable: he refused to see that happen not while he had a say.

~*~

Kyon had left for work, looking more saddened then usual, leaving both trolls alone. Jack paced on the second floor for what seemed like ages, talking himself through his actions even as he tried to argue against it, before he climbed down the stairs onto the ground floor and through the basement door. It was pitch black minus the light from the doorway, smelling of laundry detergent and musky air. Moving as silently and cautiously as possible down the steps, Jack’s entire frame was strung tight. His ears twitched in a constant, systematic motion, waiting to hear a growl or spark that alerted him that he was over stepping the boundaries. But none came, taking the final step on the flight; his eyes now adjusted enough to the gloom to make out Server’s frame.
He lay facing away from Jack, in the middle of the room, unmoving minus the light rise and fall of his chest.  His fur, prickly even at the best of times, showed little care, a small coating of grim lacing spines and fur alike. Padding forward, the smell of him was horrid, adding further proof to the evidence of complacency. Jack did not let it stop him however; he’d had a job to do.
“Leave, you little rat, I deshire your company the leasht.” Jack stopped a good foot away as the feline spoke. His voice croaked and attempted to be dismissive and dangerous but was more tired then anything. Furthermore, it concerned Jack how easily he managed to get close to Server before being addressed by him; his once sharp hearing had weakened from disuse.
“No!” Jack said surprised at how steady it came out. “I’m here to get you off your butt and back to your old self. And I’m not leaving till it’s done.”
Server chuckled, the sound a shadow of the emotion it conveyed.
“Sho, your little mashter shends a rat in her stead to shmoke me out. She’sh truly losht her touch.” Anger flickered forth to begin consuming his fear, Jack defended Kyon.
“She didn’t send me, I came on my own will.” His voice softened. “Mama-tamer is worried about you.” His voice hardened once more.
“And that’s why you can’t keep moping down here, I’m not going to let you keep hurting Kyon like you hurt me. I don’t care how selfish you keep wanting to be over a little battles, I won’t let you.”
The transformation was instantaneous, a complacent cat to a furious beast in a second. Golden sparks lit the little room blinding Jack and leaving him cowering with paws covering his eyes.
“SHELFISHH!!!” He roared. “YOU DINK I’M SHELLISHH! I’ll have you know dat “little battles” was a complete dishgrache for me. Bod should have been an eashy victory, fated even. But inshtead your tamer inshtruchted me poorly and shaw me looshe to a Woozle. A WOOZLE. At first I dought it a fluke but nah, deshtiny mocked me furder by shetting another Woozle upon me. And when itsh banshee cry was let out I . . .” He stammered, whispering to himself, not even willing to admit his own cowardice at fleeing the battle. The mental dilemma lasted a minute at most before he returned rage filled eyes upon Jack. “The point was that it wash pitiful dishplay of my shkill that cannot be forgiven. I might ash well have losht to a plashtic bag, or been killed by lightening. It would been more acceptable then being defeated by a creatures I’ve hunted many a time.” The lightening slowly subsided, head hanging as the rage ran dry within him.
“Instead, I dishgrace my noble breed and furder prove how padeic I have become.” He slunk to the floor once more becoming a near catatonic mass.
Jack sat there with eyes stinging from the light and readjusting to the gloom, anger and fear caught in a tug of war. Giving little thought to his actions (fearing he’d come to think better of it), he zoomed around to face Server.
Jack took in a deep breath and letting loose a loud, screeing cry that sounded vaguely like a lamb attempting to roar like a lion. The cry rang out for a half a minute before Jack lungs became spent and he collapsed on the ground, gasping on the air. Server stared at the Woozle in total bewilderment, completely speechless.
“What . . . the heck . . . wash dat?” he finally stated. A moment more of deep panting, Jack responded in a wispy voice.
“That’s what you are.” Server looked askance to him. “You go on and on how great your kind are, your strength, speed and manipulation of lightening mark you akin to a deity. And thus you allow yourself to look down your nose at us small creatures because we lack what you have. So you criticize and “enlighten” us on what more could be done expecting no rebuttal, as it is a great gift to be cut by your words. But then when you’re the one felled by a “lesser” being like me, instead of taking as a sign to improve, you fall into despair. And that is why you’re all noise but no action: you talk about being a great warrior but fail to admit fault to improve upon in self. And worst yet, you don’t care about those around you who want to see you accomplish this dream, you’d rather let yourself die and hurt them in the process.”
Server stared gapping at the enraged Woozle, for once lost for words. Jack didn’t seem to care; he walked back towards the stairs without further word.
“Well, you go ahead and stew down here. I’m going back upstairs to be with Mama-tamer, she’ll need me if you’re going to waste away down here. It’s a shame this is how the great Server meets his end.”

~*~

Kyon was later then normal, likely taking a long drive to think over matters: she tended to do that when she was depressed or stressed. He greeted her happily upon arrival, offering to cook her dinner and handle the dishes. She smiled sadly at him, declining his offer, as she wanted something to distract her.
“What would you like for dinner?” Kyon asked. Jack opened his mouth to respond but it was a deep, grumbling voice that responded.
“Meat, bloody, raw and warm.” Both jolted, looking over as the Critiquill exited the basement door. Kyon open and closed her mouth at a loss for words. “Did you not hear me? I demand meat for my dinner, get moving, I’m starved.”
Kyon jumped then briskly walked into the kitchen, the sound of her prepping dinner. The two trolls watched her leave before their eyes locked. An indescribable moment passed between them, dislike evident but underlined by understanding. And Jack swore he saw a flicker of gratitude in the orange orbs, though it could have been an illusion of the lighting.
“Would you like anything else while you wait?” Kyon’s voice filtered in, breaking their attention.
“Yesh, bring me a bowl of concentrated blood for me to lap at. And make sure it’sh the right temperature, I don’t want it frozen over or boiling hot for my tongue.”
“Yes Serverus.” Satisfied, the great feline trotted towards the couch and spread himself over the furniture, rasping his tongue over his fur in steady motions. It was almost as if nothing had happened over the last few days. But he’d not bring voice to his tamer, for the tone that Kyon had addressed Server with had been more cheerful then minutes earlier. Her happiness outweighed praise for turning the prickly beast.
With that set, he made his way into the kitchen to assist Kyon, already smiling as she hummed a little tune.
__________
This took way longer then it should to complete, mostly because I hit a wall with writing it. It's up now at east, that's a blessing.
For those unaware, Server battled two Woozles in the last few weeks: Scarlet's Loona and Generalwild's Waldo. Loona beat his sorry ass in a fair fight and, what's even more interesting, Waldo managed to make Server flee the battle with Haunting Cry. I thought the events after could be a good narrative to focus on: Server is a very proud creature who looks down on trolls like Woozles. So him being defeated by two (especially fleeing battle in the second one) would give some nice developement and internal conflict.
And this is why it was imperitive that Jack gain some respect from Server. The big brute would have never given Jack the time of day otherwise, and if Jack hadn't gained some brovado in dealing with Server, he'd have never taken the intitive. Nice to see how it all falls so neatly in to place.

Yep, its totes fun to work out how they interact, they sort of have a tug of war relationship: both oppose each other but knows when and how to tug at the just the right way without losing their own leverage.

It's not Server's fault he lost to a woozle. Woozles can be bold and Loona's lost as much as she's won.

Devinital In reply to Mr-Scarlet-Nokitsune [2014-09-22 18:49:14 +0000 UTC]

Yep, but he's a stuck up jerk with a major superiority complex. The fact he lost to some one he deemed "lesser" really threw off his sense of reality. In truth, it was his own doing that he lost in the first place and he'll likely be more cautious going into battles now.
Mind you, I was laughing so hard when he lost to Loona and Waldo cause I knew he needed a major reality check. Nice bit of karma if you ask me. I'm honestly glad he lost cause then I wouldn't have gotten to write out this story.

True, losing to the woozles is bad, but it's not slugwug loss bad.

Loona: *Pats Server* Sir, your loss helped me become level ten like I am now. Thank you.
