Description Sarah grunted as she pulled up on her jeans, fighting to bring both edges of the fly together over her round stomach.  With great effort, she managed to finally button them and tugged the zipper up slowly.  Feeling triumphant, she carefully walked to the full length mirror and felt her victory slip away, once more.  The jeans were creating a rather unfortunate effect where the rest of her pudgy stomach was bulging over the top and if she tried to relax her muscles, she was forced to take shallow breaths.  “Damnit,” she sighed, unbuttoning them again and rubbing at the imprint the button has left in her skin.  In the past few weeks she had noticed her clothes were fitting a little less and a little less, but it was clear she'd have to go shopping now.

“I guess I need to exercise more,” she thought to herself, poking at the firm little bulge in her middle.  Though she had been exercising as much as she always did, it was the eating that was more of a problem.  Lately it felt like all she wanted was salt and sugary things, which likely meant she was about to get her period.  She frowned, trying to remember the last time her period had come, it seemed like awhile but she had always been irregular with it.  Maybe after it started, she'd feel back to normal.  For the time being, she would just have to make do with workout pants and pajama bottoms until she found new clothes.

She pulled on a pair of yoga pants, relieved to see that they still fit, and threw on a t-shirt that was beginning to feel tight around her chest.  She moved her arms back and forth, trying to make the shirt settle more comfortably on her chest.  Everyone's boobs get a little bigger during that time of the month, though,” she assured herself.  As she scouted around for a pair of socks, her stomach growled and she remembered a bag of potato chips sitting in the cupboard.  Her mouth watered at the idea of the salty, crunchy snack.  Sarah shook her head and looked around for her shoes so she could go for a run.  She tried to ignore the hunger, but soon found that it was no use; she couldn't stop thinking about the chips.  Admitting defeat, Sarah made her way into the kitchen, grabbed the mostly full bag of chips and flopped on the couch.  She turned the TV on; a quick snack and an episode of reality TV would be fine and then she could go running.  The show she was watching felt like it was turning her brain into gelatin and she felt somewhat guilty about enjoying it with her bag of chips sitting next to her.  Over and over again she scooped chips into her mouth.  Before she had realized it, most of the chips had been devoured and she felt her eyes grow heavy, then close as she dozed off, dreaming of the date she had gone on a few months ago.

A couple of hours later, she woke with a start and realized it was almost one in the afternoon; much later than she had wanted to start the day.  Groggily, she sat up, guiltily looking at the almost empty bag of chips lying on the floor.  Sighing, she grabbed the bag, rolled it up and threw it in the trash, deciding that snacks would be left off the grocery list for a little while.  The winter sunlight seeped through the kitchen window and nourished the neat row of plants she had placed on the sill.  They were still young, but growing well in the cozy combination of plenty of sunlight and the warmth from the oven.  “I wish I could be a plant,” she said wistfully, “at least I wouldn't have to pay rent or work.”  Since moving out, Sarah had been discouraged to find that independence and freedom obtained by living alone was lonelier and quite a bit harder than she had imagined.  Most of the money she made from her two jobs went towards rent and bills.  There was very little left over to go into an anemic savings account and almost nothing left over for anything else.  She tightened her mouth and looked down at her rounder stomach.  Buying new clothes wasn't an expense she had planned on budgeting out this month, but she thought suddenly she might be able to borrow a few larger items from Lorie who was a size or two up from her and had a talent for dressing stylishly.  Pulling out her phone, she texted her friend.

“Hey, could I borrow some sweaters?”

A few minutes later, Lorie replied with: “For sure! Eat too much over the holidays?

She smiled at her friend's text and sent back, “Yeah, I think I'm PMSing too. I just want chocolate and salt.”

She went back to the living room and flopped on the couch.  Lorie's text made her phone buzz and when she looked, it cheerfully said, “Sounds like you need a movie night, too! I'll come over tomorrow.”  Sarah nodded at the phone, feeling a little better and responded to say that sounded great and she would get the snacks.  As soon as she hit the send key, she remembered her ban on snacks until she lost the extra weight.  “One movie night won't make much of a difference now,” she told herself, firmly.  She decided she would have to tell Lorie about the man she had met.

“So you guys fucked and then he never texted?”  Lorie asked, unwrapping a mini snickers bar and popping it in her mouth.  A tiny pile of wrappers sat next to her on the floor and her scarlet lipstick was tinged with chocolate.  Lorie was happily curvy and beautiful, she kept healthy but didn’t worry about her weight and had a great hourglass figure.

“Just a one night stand, I guess,” Sarah said gloomily, reaching into an open bag of  chips she had bought earlier.  “I really liked him, he made me feel…” she paused and a flush crept over her cheeks as a memory of sensations hit her.  She still couldn’t recall much about the night she had spent with him, except that it had been intense and powerful.  She grabbed a cookie and stuffed it in her mouth, feeling embarrassed.

Her friend grinned slowly, missing nothing.  “Must’ve been a great night,” she teased, laughing as Sarah turned bright red.

“Yeah…” she mumbled, “can we talk about anything else…at all…in the universe?”

“Fiiiiiiine,” Lorie agreed, grabbing a cookie from the tray.  “Well, hopefully you’re feeling better,” she said in between bites, “and don’t worry about getting those clothes back to me, I wanted to go shopping anyway.  I’d rather see them on my bestie than dropped in a bin.”  She tossed her blonde, wavy hair over her shoulder and brushed crumbs off of her shirt.

Again Sarah could feel the heat rising in her face.  The new clothes would be welcome, especially if she couldn’t get the weight off soon.  She didn’t quite fill out Lorie’s sweaters and skirts but they’d be fine for the time being.  Maybe she could ask her parents for a little extra cash or pick up some extra hours so she could also go shopping.  “So, what’s been going on with you?”  She asked, cheerfully.

They spent the night watching bad movies, the pile of candy slowly diminishing until it was just wrappers, followed by the pan of brownies Sarah had made and two more bags of chips.  Neither said anything about the binge, but Sarah felt satisfied for the first time in a long time as her cravings were soothed.  She could afford a cheat night once in awhile, seeing how she was broke most of the time she figured losing the weight would be easy.

“Not..again..” She grunted a few weeks later in a store dressing room.  This was her third pair of jeans she was trying on and despite being a size up, they couldn’t button closed either.  The first two had been in her previous size but in different cuts - the curvy ones were supposed to make her ass look good and they had but they also hadn’t been able to be closed.  Now, even the larger jeans were too small.  She pursed her lips, staring at her reflection in the dressing room mirror.  She saw a girl that had been skinny before but was now sporting a pot belly.  The rest of the month she had felt too exhausted to keep up with her workout routine, feeling like all of her energy was being sucked out of her when she tried to do anything strenuous.  It was probably from the extra shifts she had picked up at her jobs or the January chill but it had done nothing for her weight.  Despite her theory that satisfying her cravings would help her get back to a normal diet, she had only started buying more unhealthy foods.  When the grocery store had a sale on pizza rolls, she had stuffed a few bags in her basket, alongside the cookies and chocolate milk.  A jar of French onion dip had also found its way there, along with a family sized bag of potato chips.  It was weird because she really didn’t like French onion dip at all, it was just lately she couldn’t get the taste out of her mouth, like her brain was recalling the flavor over and over again.  Once home from the store she had baked the pizza rolls and scarfed them down, dipping them in the tangy dip as well.

Sarah grimaced.  It was no wonder she was getting fat when she was eating like that.  She rubbed one hand over her belly, feeling its firmness.  It seemed to switch between feeling firm and feeling soft and fatty, sometimes it switched during the day as she was working.  Her uniforms and aprons hid the extra weight but it quickly came to her focus if she paused during her shift or wasn’t busy enough.  Her period still had not come, but now she was too afraid to take a pregnancy test.  She knew she would have to before it was too late, but the idea of a baby was overwhelming.

With a sigh, she pushed the thoughts away and left the dressing room to find a larger size of jeans.
