Description

A little disclaimer: I like Poland and Polish people and don’t wish such a future to them and I do not call for a violation of the territorial integrity of Poland. This map just a fantasy on this subject without any assessments
Two years after the re-election of Donald Trump as a president in November 2020 heavy crisis hit on the United States of America - and the whole world after them. Debt overload emerged after 2008 and trade wars all around the world caused mass bankruptcies that turned into a domino effect. The stock market crash led to the outflow of investments that caused disastrous damage to the countries with close ties with the American economy.

In one of them - Poland - this trouble intensified another old polish problem - tensions between liberal north-west of the country and conservative south-east. Ruled over Poland for the last 7 years conservative Law and Justice were replaced by liberal Civic Platform during snap elections designated after mass protests, strikes, and disorders of September 2022.

Left coalition of Civic Platform besides program of reanimation of the national economy initiated transformations on decentralization of the country and liberal reforms on social issues as well. As the first stage of this course, the Parlament supplemented Act on National and Ethnic Minorities and on the Regional Language of 6 January 2005, recognizing Silesian, German and Podlachian (“svoja mova”) as regional languages. Regionalist movements whose existing was legitimized by language recognition turned on into elaboration of territorial decentralization project, insisting on the exceptional status of national autonomies which must be created.

In particular, the Silesian movement preserved the idea of setting aside actually Silesian lands from Silesian Voivodship and incorporating Opole Voivodship into it. The most radical part of the movement held to the idea of independence and claimed whole historical Silesia - including the city of Wroclaw.

Even so economic reforms put an end to the harshest phase of the crisis, stagnation continued in Poland. Decentralization Act carried out through the Parlament right before elections assigned local elections on the next year after parliamentary elections. Failed with opening new vision for the country Civic Platform lost its popularity that caused the frustrating results of the elections where neither party get a majority. Next year paralyzed Poland spend into coalitional negotiations. Law and Justice promised to put an end to the “fragmentation of the country and the nation” and blamed Civic Platform in betrayal of the interests of the nation. The question of autonomies became more and more sensitive: public disorders between autonomists and unionists raged in regions, leading to further radicalization of both sides.

4 of March 2027 regional elections happen all across Poland. In Silesia deputies of few powiats of Silesian and Opole Voivodship willfully gathered not in their legislatures apart but all together in Opole, where proclaimed united Silesian Autonomous Voivodship.

Also, this year during tense campaign Mariusz Błaszczak (Law and Justice) was elected as a new president of Poland with minimal superiority. Under his pressure, the coalition in Parlament finally was formed around his party. With its first acts, the new government canceled all regional languages and cut voivodships' autonomy.

In response, 21 March self-declared Council of Silesian Autonomous Voivodship proclaimed the independent Republic of Silesia and a former head of Council Jerzy Gorzelik as a Chancellor of Silesia.

22 of March Voivoda of neighbor Lesser Poland Voivodship ordered to 11th brigade of Territorial Defence Forces to enter Catowice metropolitan area and move towards Opole. Jerzy Gorzelik declared 13th Silesian and 17th Opole brigades of Territorial Defence Forces parts of a 1st Silesian National Army and commanded to 13th to relocate to Tychy. 17th Opole brigade recognized Chancellor as a chief and requested orders. 13th brigade ignored proclamation but obeyed to order and moved towards advancing Lesser Poland brigade.

Near the city of Tychy two brigades meat each other. Silesian brigade refused to pass over 11th. Colonel of Lesser Poland brigade put forward an ultimatum: if there will be something between him and his destination after 5:00 P.M. 11th brigade going to destroy it. Till that time every who wants to surrender can do this without any consequences. Near 100 soldiers from 13th brigade surrendered - mainly those who from non-silesian parts of Voivodship. At 6:15 P.M. assault began. In night fight during defense and further counter-attack Silesians knocked back the enemy.

After the first blood of a conflict level of violence started to grow exponentially. 5 checkpoints on the Czech border were besieged, two of them were captured by separatists and control over two more of them is still disputed. One of four battalions of Lower Silesian brigade rebelled after the attempt of the Polish government to send it on the riot suppression. With battles, they retreated to southern borders.

Syne NATO collapsed after the US withdraw their participation during second Tramp’s term, Germany where far-right Macht für Deutschland (former Alternative für Deutschland) gain power, informally supported the rebellion and even concentrated its army along the Polish border, causing symmetric answer of poles. In May, the whole battalion was formed with volunteers from Germany.

After bloody April turmoil in the Wroclaw Ostrava treaty was signed in the Czech Republic, determined so-called “Ostrava-line”. To the south of it, every armed force except police and territorial defense was prohibited.

This status quo, which doesn’t suit anyone, was relatively well established, and although the clashes between territorial defense brigades continue, the city of Wroclaw is actually divided into two parts and the further fate of Silesia and Poland is not clear, perhaps a lull is the best of the possible options. However, everyone agrees that with each passing day the situation may erupt with increasing probability and much greater strength.
