Description
[Italian]Vittoria! Vittoria!
L'alba vindice appar
che fa gli empi tremar!
Libertà sorge, crollan tirannidi!
[English Translation]
Victory! Victory!
The avenging dawn now rises
To make the wicked tremble!
And liberty returns, the scourge of tyrants!
--Mario Cavaradossi, Tosca--
Roberto Alagna as the dashing artist, Mario Cavaradossi, in the 2001 filmed version of Puccini's Italian opera, Tosca.
Romantic, suave, passionate and steadfast, the Cavalier Cavaradossi (as he's called in the opera) is in Rome, working on a commisioned painting of Mary Magdalene in a church, when an escaped convict from the nearby Castel Sant' Angelo seeks refuge within the same church. Mario's consenting to help the convict eventually leads him to be thrown into a dark world of politics, blackmail and betrayal.
I've found Mario to be quite an intriguing character and Roberto Alagna does him justice in this version of Puccini's dark and dramatic opera.
I drew this a few months back, during my first few days in Indonesia. It's such a relief to finally be able to post it up on DA!
Done with 6H, HB, 2B, 4B and 8B pencils in my sketchbook.
