Description
--EDIT--I've had the privilege of having this portrait signed by Ramli Ibrahim after his 'Spellbound' Odissi performance at AIMST University, Kedah, Malaysia on 25th October 2009.
It was a breath-taking performance which I enjoyed immensely and I found Ramli Ibrahim to be a humble and most eloquent person.
January Low was not present at the performance, though.
Now, excuse me please while I go find my list of 100 things I must do before I die... need to mark "Attending a classical dance performance by Ramli Ibrahim" as accomplished.
----
Ramli Ibrahim is a world-renown Bharatanatyam and Odissi dancer. He is also the dance choreographer and artistic director of the Sutra Dance Theatre in Malaysia.
January Low, a Malaysian Indian classical dancer, is one of the famous and talented Sutra Dancers.
... And they're both coming with the rest of the Sutra Dancers to perform in AIMST university!!!
I bought my ticket a month in advance
This took about 3 days to complete. It's the first time I'm drawing two people together in such a dynamic pose. And the hands... were killing me, really. (I'm that bad at drawing fingers
The background did give some headache too (the reference piccie had a totally black background).
Anyways, done with reference material in my sketchbook using F, 6H, 2B, and 8B pencils.

I don't know who it is Dev?! But it is definitely awesome that you could get someone to autograph a drawing that you did of them! Can you tell me about him?

Owh, I forgot. Sorry, Rich.
To say he's a really good classical dancer is an understatement. Indian classical dance is an extremely beautiful art form. Classical dancers must be agile, lithe, athletic, incredibly graceful, endure tremendous fatigue through prolonged bouts of dancing (which could stretch to hours) and be able to act with their eyes, faces and body.
However, it's also very hard to master due to these same reasons. The training is long and strenuous, and many people are unable to get even halfway through it.
Despite this, Ramli Ibrahim has done it. He's a master of two different ancient dance art forms which are Bharatanatyam and Odissi .
He's gone touring all over the world, promoting Indian classical dance to the global community. Since he's also a Malaysian, he has helped elevate Malaysia's status in the eyes of the numerous appreciators of the fine arts.
On top of all that, he is the dance choreographer and artistic director of the Sutra Dance Theatre, based right here in Malaysia.
Here's a brief article on him [link]

Since you gave them such dark outlines... I think it'd look 100 times better if you do color the background totally black... it'll turn out perfect, I promise.

Thanks so much for the suggestion! Well, the reference piccie had a black background, but I didn't shade it in because:
1. I wanted Ramli Ibrahim's autograph on it.
2. The black shades tend to stick on the opposite page of my sketchbook. For some reason, that's always the case when I use pencils... DX
D'you have any suggestions as to what I can do to stop it smearing?

Well, I understand how you feel. Maybe you can send it for professional coating. A great artist once taught me the use of carpenter's glue to do it but better to leave it to the hands of pros. The cheapest option is to laminate it.

both figures and faces are very well done although I wish they were shaded a bit darker and the outline is a bit disconcerting...
..scanner settings? I have problem with those all the time, the reason I hardly do pencils nowaday..
