Description Chapter 11

“Excuse me,” __y/n__ murmured to the other Gladers, while she made her way to Gally. She mentally scolded herself for being so stupid to listen to Annabel again. She already knew what would happen. She would ask Gally to listen to her, and maybe, just maybe, he would. And when she was done pouring her heart out, he would say that he hated her, and probably walk away.
She flinched when someone cursed at her because she accidentally stepped on his hand. She muttered an apology before sitting down next to Gally.
“Hi,” she said softly.
“Hey.”
“How—are you?” __y/n__ bit her lip. Why did she always say stupid things in uncomfortable circumstances?
“Never better,” Gally replied sarcastically, rolling his eyes.
__y/n__ fought back the tears that were pricking in her eyes. She couldn’t cry in front of him, it would ruin any chance she would have of making things right. She took a deep breath before speaking again. “Gally, I never meant to hurt you, I—”
Gally huffed. “You don’t understand, do you? I had been trapped in this place for nearly a year before I got my memories back. And you know what? I was actually okay with it. I was okay with living here. But ever since I know the reason why we were sent here, I feel nothing but hatred for the people who did this to us. Then suddenly you show up, and I admit that I was happy that you were okay. I was glad that I could now keep an eye out for you, but I kept my distance knowing that you would never like me the way I wanted you to. But of course I couldn’t do that. I’m drawn to you like a magnet. When you got stung by that Griever I thought I’d lost you again. I stayed with you day and night, and when you finally woke up, I couldn’t control myself anymore. I was so glad you were okay that I kissed you.” Gally finally looked __y/n__ in her eyes. “I kissed you,” he hissed. “I kissed you while you’ve been working with them. I kissed you while you’ve been watching me. Do you know how stupid I feel? I kissed a girl who turned out to be one of them. The people I hate with every vein in my body.”
__y/n__ just sat there motionless, watching Gally. She let the words slowly sink in. It was clear that Gally was done with her, that it was better for her to just give up, but she couldn’t. It felt as if there was still something to fight for.
She wanted to say something, but no words came. Then it suddenly hit her. I’m drawn to you like a magnet, he had said. Present tense. Does that mean he still likes her? Even now, after everything he said?
“Gally, I don’t want to lose you,” she whispered.
Gally looked startled. If anything, he looked angry. He glared at her, before quickly dropping his gaze again. “Just stop.”
“Gally, stop acting like this. I know you still care about me,” __y/n__  lied. She glanced at Gally and to her surprise saw that he looked defeated. Had she been right?
“I do,” he finally admitted after a long pause. He shifted uncomfortably on the floor, not daring meeting __y/n__’s gaze.
“I know I messed up,” __y/n__ said, sensing an opportunity to apologize. “But I just wanted to protect you, and I thought that—”
“It’s okay. I forgive you.”
“What?” __y/n__ asked confused. “That easily?”
Gally rolled his eyes. “If you’d like, I can stay mad at you.”
“N-no, but—you seemed mad just a second ago.”
Gally shrugged solemnly. “I wish I could stay mad at you, but I just—can’t.”
__y/n__ let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding. A smile appeared on her face, but it disappeared instantly. “B-but where do we stand?” she asked hesitantly, afraid of the answer she would get.
Just as Gally smiled shyly, an eerie moan could be heard from the Maze, almost immediately followed by the rolling clicks of a Griever.
__y/n__ instantly shut her eyes and started to tremble, as she remembered the fearsome creatures with their bulbous bodies. Her eyes snapped open when she felt a hand grip hers, but was relieved to see that it belonged to Gally.
She scooted closer to him and as soon as she was close enough, he wrapped his arms around her protectively, as if to shield her from the bad things that were going to happen.
__y/n__ saw Newt rise to his feet across the room, waving his arms wildly and putting a finger to his lips to shush the room. When he slowly tiptoed to the only window in the room, she buried her face in Gally’s neck.
He held her even tighter, and gently lifted her chin until she looked him in the eye. “I’m not going to let anything bad happen to you, I promise,” he whispered, before planting a kiss on her hair.
__y/n__ felt safe in his arms. If she had to stay in his embrace for the rest of her life, she would’ve lived a happy one. But she knew that it wasn’t possible. Not yet anyway.
“Must be three or four of ‘em,” Newt whispered, before walking back to his place.
__y/n__ listened intently as the clicks went on, coming closer with the second. Then everything went quiet.
__y/n__ felt her heart rate quicken. She looked at Gally and saw the fear in his eyes. She gasped when suddenly a metal arm stuck through the boards in the window and tore a board off, followed by another arm that did the same thing.
“We need to get out of here!” Newt yelled.
Gally immediately stood up, helping __y/n__ stand as well. “Stay close,” he said, before moving towards the only exit in the room.
__y/n__ panicked. What if Gally disappeared in the crowd? She would never be able to find him, let alone protect him. “Gally, wait!” she shouted.
Gally turned around and grabbed __y/n__’s hand, tugging her towards the exit.
“Everyone get to the woods,” __y/n__ heard Newt yell when she almost reached the exit.
Suddenly she was shoved hard against a wall. She felt Gally’s hand slip away, even though she desperately tried to hold on. But to no avail. “Gally,” she cried as she pushed past a few Gladers towards the exit.
Suddenly she was outside, and she didn’t waste a moment to look for Gally. She ran to the front of the Homestead, but let out a shaky breath when she saw the scene in front of her: a Griever was approaching her. And he was moving fast. She tried to back away, but soon felt the rough wood of the walls of the Homestead pricking her back. She watched in horror as the creature made its way to her, and she closed her eyes to brace herself for what was coming.
She shrieked as she was suddenly pushed aside, and her eyes flew open. She saw the Griever crash into the building, and realized what had happened as she looked at Gally, who was lying on top of her.
“Y-you saved me,” she stammered.
“Of course I did,” he replied, grinning sheepishly. “I told you I wouldn’t let anything bad happen to you, didn’t I?”
__y/n__ slowly nodded. She watched him for a moment before realizing what she really wanted. She slowly inched forward and pressed her lips against Gally’s.
He didn’t hesitate and immediately kissed back, while cupping her cheek. After a brief moment he pulled away, still smiling. “I love you,” he whispered.
__y/n__ felt her cheeks redden as she opened her mouth to answer. “I lo—”
But she didn’t get the time to tell him how she felt, because suddenly Gally was lifted off of her. Her eyes widened in shock when she saw a metal arm wrapped around his body. A Griever had gotten him.
“No, Gally!” she shouted, getting to her feet. She ran towards him, but he was too high in the air, she couldn’t reach him. “No,” she yelled, looking around for something sharp to stab the Griever with.
“__y/n__,” she suddenly heard above her.
She looked up and saw Gally looking down at her, pain written all over his face.
“Save yourself, I-I’ll be—fine.”
“No, don’t do this to me, I just got you back,” she cried, while tears streamed down her face.
“I promise I’ll be f-fine. Now s-save yourself.”
The Griever then decided their little chat was over, and it turned around and clicked towards the Maze, away from __y/n__.
“Gally!” __y/n__ shouted one last time. “I—I love you too.”
