Description
From my fantasy universe
based on Beja tribes
Athtari is the demonym used by Sangites to describe the peoples who live along the tributaries of the River Jawirha, in the arid region south of the Kingdom of Sang beyond the Jagged Peaks. They do not refer to themselves as Athtari, but belong to one of many tribes. They are incredibly resilient from having to survive both the harsh climate and fierce fighting between neighbouring tribes. They are a constant thorn in the side of the Jawirhans, Sangites, and Absu, who have difficulty pursuing the raiders that are not used to the heat or the speed of their horses, or the distance their camels can travel. Indeed pursuers have been lured into the desert then encircled by the very same party they were searching for, only to discover they had made time to bring more of their friends.
The rocks are cool to the touch, and have damp moss growing upon them, and green grasses grow around. There are oases here. No fighting is allowed at the dolmens, and is a place for communion and discussion. No one may occupy it, or stay for too long. If one does, it is said the stones transform into shadow beasts that will eat you. They have pictograms of unknown origin.
Nothing drinks from the oases, animals do not rest upon the stones or the area. You may drink with little harm, but it is bad luck to take more than a handful. The black stones are unlike any other in the region, and have eroded into strange hoodoo-like shapes. Many scoff at the prospect of the area being an ill-omen, but gaze upon the stones and you do not stay for long. It is said between the tribes that it is because so many had died fighting over the drinking water that there are vengeful spirits inhabiting the stones who are jealous of those that enjoy the place.
Ika
Affixed onto the hair are decorations called ‘Ika” that fit at the bottom of the chords, a ring for stealing a horse, a medium Ika for a battle, and a large colourful Ika for leading a successful battle. Particularly successful chieftains run out of space on their hair, or are made uncomfortable by them, and will affix them to their favourite horse, or at the end of a piece of cloth on their person. Bzk has run out of room on all of these and instead picks Ika for his favourite victories and leaves the rest at home.
