Description
Lost interest. I don’t want to work on this anymore.I find it funny that after looking at one of my art books a few times I start to get influenced by the artist without consciously making the decision to want to. I was looking through my Frazetta art book and slowly realized that the character in front of me was so Frazetta-esque even though that is not what I had in mind when drawing. I actually hadn’t thought of him at all, yet there he was creeping onto my page. This has happened before and time and time again I change my style a little without realizing I’m starting to take after another artist.
But what’s even more funny is the amount of influences that pile on top of each other, sometimes I draw something and I see Fire Emblem, or DA, or maybe Ted Nasmith. The real challenge is not ripping off any of the above and remaining original.
When I was a kid I drew superheroes constantly, in high school I ended up doing Fire Emblem-esque characters, then Japanese samurai and ninjas, ended up having about year and a half stint concentrating solely on vampires…
This work is a bit of fanart for Dragon Age II of the Reaver class. Now I found that this class was incredibly interesting, and maybe one of the more original ones included in the game. The class’s defining characteristic is that you gain power the more health you lose, what could be more terrifying than thinking you have the upper hand on your opponent only to find out they are actually getting stronger?
The realistic fantasy thinker I am I decided that the Reaver would not wear much armour in order to be able to be hurt or hurt themselves, as one of the class’s abilities is called “Sacrificial Frenzy” where one takes a bit of their health in order to gain even more power than when being hit by an enemy. So I added a small knife to be carried in the belt of the Reaver. I also made the armour aggressive as one of the old abilities is called “Frightening Appearance” where merely looking at the Reaver would render one helpless. Another interesting ability is “Aura of Pain” where small amounts of health are taken to cause greater damage to enemies within a 6 metre radius of the Reaver. It says in it’s description in the game that true Reavers have drank the ritually prepared blood of a dragon, so I added some draconic (that word passed spell check by the way) influences into the armour (said blood increases one’s strength but may cause insanity).
I had this image in my head a while and used BM as primary inspiration.
