Your art is so awe-inspiring and reminiscent of the great G.S.P, I bet if he saw your work, he would be so proud. Keep up the fantastic paleoart!

Awesome! Was wondering if Dapletosaurus' tail was a bit too long. Could be wrong but just an initial observation

This drawing was done a long time ago. The proportion of the Dapletosaurus is based on Paul's skeletal from the book "Predatory dinosaurs of the World". If you do get a chance to see the book you'll see that the tail is quite long in Paul's book. Even if you check out his recent publication (his field guide); the tail on his "Dapletosaurus" is very long also. Now whether he based the measurements on an actual specimen or scaled up from multiple specimen? I'm not too sure as I have no idea how complete the original specimen is. Part of the reason why it looks longer than it should be perhaps it is because I didn't give enough muscle mass on the tail; like most artist prior to the publication of the Carnotaurus paper on tail musculature we never think about adding enough superficial muscle on top of the leg operating muscles on the tail. Resulting the tail looking much more slender than they should and creates the illusion of it being longer .

Nice picture I had to add this to my favorites. Tell me though what are the name the species in this picture?

dewlap In reply to Franchescco [2013-02-02 10:41:11 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, and there you go (from left to right) ostrich, albertosaurus, albertosaurus_juvenile(smaller, the one that still has some kind of insulation on the body and probably looses them as it becomes more mature), tyrannosaurus, daspletosaurus and dilong. However, compare to the "modern day" standard, they probably need to be more "feathery".

Yes, it is daspletosaurus, I've commented on this earlier (Please scroll up to the top).

u should have put tarbosaurus, unless this was only about the N.american tyrannosaurs.

dewlap In reply to amorousdino [2011-01-10 21:58:45 +0000 UTC]

It was for an article that my manager wrote and he didn't mention Tarbosaurus in his article and therefore Tarbosaurus wasn't in it. There is no "should have" on this piece because I never said this drawing comprises ALL known tyrannosaurids. Hence the title "Tyrannosaurids" (could be any two or more but doesn't mean ALL of them) rather than "All Known Tyrannosaurids".

Thanks, I'm glad you like it. Paul's work is pretty much like the industry standard, so I suppose just like many others I'm inspired by his illustrations.

pilsator In reply to dewlap [2010-09-13 01:09:50 +0000 UTC]

Can't deny that (my stuff has some undeniable GSP influence as well). It's kinda interesting to see that some artists are much closer to his style than others. The scalation patterns and the deep skin folds along the necks and bodies of your tyrants are about the most Paulian I've ever seen - and I don't mean that as any slight to your artwork

It is quite the contrary, actually I'm pleased to hear someone regards my scribble resembles Paul's work. Hopefully I'll develop my own style some day...

Your own style is very apparent in other stuff, especially the "giant crurotarsians" pic

dewlap In reply to pilsator [2010-09-18 17:19:21 +0000 UTC]

Well, in that case then it also depending on the drawing surface the "tyrannosaurids" was drawn on coquille boards whereas the "giant crurotarsians"_ the crocs, (I think that is the one that you are referring to... since I've never used that title...) was only drawn on plain paper.

Nice comparison.
I like the addition of the ostrich, makes it easier to see just how big these animals were.

Good job!

Sometimes people cannot envisage the size of these giants and by including something that everyone (should) recognize, people can visualize these animals better (i hope...)
