Description
Not meant to be a rant or starting drama, but something I noticed and would like to address.I noticed a discussion in the community in the Twitter space regarding the quality of renders many people are putting out, here's my 2C on this topic. I don't usually weigh myself in real serious discussions that can start a stir along with drama, but I'm going to do it for once. Now this is not meant to be an attack on anyone and their work, so please don't take this as starting drama or an insult to your work. I am highlighting something that I have seen in a number of renders and I will leave it to you if you want to do something about it or not (if you are part of that category). If you are happy with what you do, by all means, do so. You do you and I am not going to stop you.
It is quite known that the Splatoon GMOD and SFM sector has a lot of renders with quality wildly all over the place, some are amazing and fantastic while quite a number are low level with no effort put in them (Effectly garbage). In fact, there are are so much low-level work that it often overshadows those who put time and effort into their work (You can blame the Algorithm and parts of the fanbase), its a shame but it is what it is. You put your heart and soul into that work making the best you can do only not to get any attention, I understand that feeling It really sucks. As the Splatoon community is massive and diverse, this is bound to happen as with any fanbase, so I am not surprised why we are here and have a lot of fanworks of different ends of the extremes of quality (with low efforts being prominent). But at the same time, it is something we shouldn't ignore especially if we want to grow and improve as a community. BTW I am aware of the history of this community and its ongoing struggles, but that is not what we are discussing, we are looking at the quality of work not controversies.
One area of discussion regarding the issue the community had was the execution of character posing. A lot of people (Including me in many cases) feature characters with very stiff and unnatural poses. What do they mean, they are referring to the fact that many have zero to no flex, bend, and twist, throughout the body where possible. This makes it look odd and more like robots (with no articulation) or inanimate objects. One example of a very low (If not zero) effort pose would be the A Pose, simply move the arms down and call it a day. Apart from leaving the character in the stock T Pose this could be seen as the most laziest way to pose a character and the result really shows. It doesn't look good most of the time, and the character looks like a soulless static figure. Plus you can look at the render above to see how they look in full, quite odd and very off don't you think? No matter how you spin it, really won't look good unless done intentionally for an effect. This isn't new news and many other artists (big and small) have called out on this for pretty much the same reasons, low effort.
Now to those to often pose their characters like this, I highly suggest you not restrict yourself to the arms and legs and play with all parts of the models' bones. Yes, posing is not easy, and doing it right is a challenge, posing takes time and effort along with trial and error. You can always use a picture of a pose for reference if you need a guide. I am not disregarding your talents and capability, many of you who produce this type of render have talent and are capable to make a really half-decent poster at worst to a fairly folio-worthy render at best. You just need to push yourself a bit more and use all the capabilities you have. I am also guilty of this as well, especially with my early renders it took me time and practice to become somewhat decent with posing, and even then, I still believe it needs a lot of work in many aspects. The more time and effort you put in, the better you will become. You won't start off doing great poses as I sure was not, but with practice and time, you will improve and produce something worthwhile for the community to see and be truly proud of. Now if you are happy with what you make and have no concern by all means do what you want, again you do you. But I highly encourage you to Try to do more than just move the arms and legs, the more you try the more you learn.
Practice makes perfect.
