There was a lot of teasing on what was going to happen in Pacific Rim 2. Possible psychic connections to the hive mind centering around the two scientists who made contact with it to the Aliens using the Jaeger technology that survived the self destruction of Gypsy Danger in their universe. Counterstrike is basically a crude coupling of Kaiju organics and the parts salvaged from Gypsy Danger by those over lords from the other side. Sent back to exact some revenge on humanity this Kaiju/Mech hybrid contains a Overlord driver within it making it a highly intelligent adversary.
