The client described him as coming from aristocracy but having deliberately chosen the toughest course of action to get where he was in order to not appear to have gotten rank merely by his lineage. I forget the exact words, but the image was supposed to be a self-important reference, like that of a commissioned portrait Dukes and Lords have done of themselves.
