Description Thumbnail sketch process for a Nightcrawler commission. Trying to figure out a decent pose that the buyer will like. And some head doodles to get a feel for the character and some of the lighting.

Love all these poses Derek! Fantastic! Would love to see these poses in some form of an animatic, see it move. Could be kinda cool!

tons of flow, and squash and stretch going on here, D. any of these, if it were brought to a final stage would be a winner.

I like 5 & 6. 6 would be even better if Nightcrawlers eye contact seemed to be on some unseen foe he'd just kicked away,- having it's shadow falling across his lower half would help support the situation further.

Wow there's lot you can do with him. Kinda like Spider Man.

On the one hand, the character is an acrobat. On the other, I've only got a few stock poses in my crappy repetoire

Don't forget the "bamf!" when you do decide on a final pose!

Ah yes. Might keep it to the smoke cloud, or write it out. We'll see.

Great gestures and I agree on 7 though there's a lot of good options. Only issue is why only one sword? Shouldn't it be three?

dfridolfs In reply to jvollmer [2009-05-22 22:29:36 +0000 UTC]

Really? Has he carried 3 before? My mind is a blank. Although talk about a cool visual.

Back in the campier days of his mini-series he did the swashbuckling thing with one in each hand and one with the tail.

TimTownsend [2009-05-22 22:14:00 +0000 UTC]

The hardest part about drawing for me is simply coming up with poses. I envy naturals like you. The drawing for me is academic. That blank sheet of paper though....I just go...well...blank!

dfridolfs In reply to TimTownsend [2009-05-22 22:27:00 +0000 UTC]

I wish it were natural. Actually I wish my finished versions were less stiff and more lose and carefree like in the sketch process. I think I'm gonna give up on doing things professional and just draw everything in small thumbnails on typing paper

Interesting. Im a stickler about stiffness and I honestly think your drawings are anything but. Theres so much spontaneity and freedom in what Im seeing. Youve really come in to your own, amigo.

7 is a great idea. I don't think anyone has ever really drawn him taking that sort of action out of teleporting, it's usually something more like 10.

dfridolfs In reply to dennisculver [2009-05-22 21:57:18 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I thought it would be an interesting visual to shoot him out like a rocket.
