The priest. Yes, this character is so called.
This creature lives (as you already guessed) in churches and cathedrals. During the day, it leads a peaceful life in the guise of an ordinary priest, who can be found in any city.
Reading the litany or conducting any divine services in human form, "looked" into the consciousness and excerpt memories of people in the hall, looking for next victim of his retribution. To some extent, the priest was engaged in the culling of criminals and all sorts of maniacs.
Ordinary thieves or murderers who, through carelessness, destroyed someone's life, did not interest him, but various rapists, psychopaths, murderers who mock their victims, and other contingent – his favorite profile.
Such he stalked them during the divine services in the churches and laughed hoarsely, when another such bastard came to confess, carrying a stench of vile crime.

These creatures had an unstable psyche, so they often gnawed at each other, even to death. But as soon as the owner returned, all the dogfights immediately ceased, and silence reigned.
Delivering the victim to the host's shelter, the dogs left and wandered around the neighborhood until the morning, they caught their food in the parks and settlements closest to the church. The hounds it was forbidden to touch ordinary people.

Жило это существо (как уже все догадались) в церквях, соборах, храмах и днём вело вполне мирную жизнь, меняя облик на обычного батюшку, которого можно встретить в любом городе. Читая ектении или проводя какие-либо богослужения в человеческом облике,"заглядывал" в сознание и отрывочные воспоминания людей в зале, ища очередную жертву своего возмездия. В какой-то степени Батюшка занимался выбраковкой преступников и всякого рода маньяков. Обычные воришки или убийцы, которые по неосторожности погубили чью-то жизнь, его не интересовали, а вот разномастные насильники, психопаты-убийцы, издевающиеся над жертвами, и прочего вида контингент - его любимый профиль. Вот их он и вычислял во время свои богослужений в церквях и хрипло тихо смеялся, когда очередной такой ублюдок приходил исповедоваться, неся за собой смрад мерзкого преступления. На что рассчитывал этот отступник? Что пара фраз и перекрестие смоет этот позор? Нет, позор будет смыт по-другому. Батюшка примерно запоминал, где живёт бывший преступник (а ныне будущая жертва), и осторожно помечал его смесью масел, запах которых прекрасно знали гончие, выведенные батюшкой специально для этих целей. Гончие - это собакоподобные существа, которые доставляли преступников ночью прямо на порог храма. Порою собаки были сшиты из разных тел и не всегда нормально управлялись со своими конечностями, но функцию по поимке жертв несли исправно. Также существа отличались нестабильной психикой, из-за чего могли грызться и драться между собой, вплоть до смертельных исходов. Но стоило появиться хозяину, как все собачьи бои тут же прекращались и воцарялась тишина.
Доставив будущую жертву в комнату хозяина, собаки удалялись и бродили по окрестностям до утра, ловя себе еду в парке или реке или стащив пару кур у ближайших жителей домов, расположенных рядом с церковью. Трогать обычных людей животным было запрещено.
Расправлялся Батюшка с преступниками очень просто: не применяя никаких физических воздействий, он растаптывал жертву ментально, давая ей почувствовать всё то, что чувствовали несчастные пока убийца наслаждался моментом издевательств. Было смешно наблюдать, как катался по полу и визжал, как резаная свинья тот, кто совсем недавно применял наяву к человеку то, что происходит сейчас в его голове. Пялясь бессмысленным взором в угол комнаты, преступник чувствовал этот липкий первобытный страх, который не давал сдвинуться с места и пытаться хоть как-то выбраться из своей собственной головы.
Обычно батюшкины экзекуции доводили жертв до мучительной смерти, которые затем выбрасывались в ближайший лес, как ненужный материал. Были и те, кто выживал, но уже не оставался в рассудке и вынужден был жить с поломанным разумом до конца своих дней. Таких гончие доставляли в ближайшую деревню и там оставляли у первого дома. Батюшка их больше не трогал.
