In my Oz novel, Jack Pumpkinhead has to periodically replace his head. New heads are grown from the seeds he scoops out of the old one so he'll have his memories in the new one. During the story, his head gets smashed off, but an emergency replacement -with seeds gathered from the pulp on the floor added- has him as good as new.
