I got a call from my editors in the X-Men office at Marvel about a month ago to do some design work for some new Sentinels. for the last 30 or so years the Sentinels have had the same general design so Marvel wanted to spruce them up for the new Civil War story line going on this Summer. They didn't give me any other guidelines except to make them each look original and bad-ass. There are 5 all together named Warmachine, Crazytrain, Ogre, Shrapnel, and Megaton. Salvador Larroca designed Warmachine and Crazytrain so I was charged with doing the final 3. I tried to make them characteristic with their name and give them the ominous feel I think a Sentinel should have. Inspiration came from all over the place including Gundam, Transformers, Evangelion, Big O, Thundercats, and the 5th Element. I should also mention that these have all already been approved and are currently being drawn by Marvel artists for this Summer's comics. I have mixed feelings about the designs. I like them over all, but I personally would want at least a semblance of sentinel feel to them.

Mark, your work is an inspiration. I've been an x-men fan as long as I've breathed, these are the best damned sentinels I've seen to date.

Pretty badass, can't wait to see them in civil war.
Though I do kind of feel changing the design so much does spoil the "Oooh Sentinels in Civil War!" factor since they're almost a different giant robot rather than a Sentinel.

...i must admit i only knew of x men from the morning cartoons... so i have a stupid question.. are the sentinals the big purpule robot things that the x men ran away from all the time?
or sumthin else.
but all and all they look great and im not much of a x man fan (not that i dont like x man but comics and stuff dont realy make it to me in the small auzzie towns) but i do know what i like and these i like.. instant FAV

hey i like the drawings, i can really see the gundam influence. yeah i think the sentinels needed a slight upgrade, personally i am partial to the simple design element for the sentinels, it felt more sinister to me in some way. But i like your art a lot, keep it up.

Seriously dude nice work... time to spot the influences...
5th Element (hunched armadillo segmented look, look of segmented hands)
Gundam etc... (wing-like appendages and various ammo / generator piles sticking out)
Transformers (Heads... in particular the second sentinel loks rather like a particular flying decepticon)
Thundercats (the head/mouth of the 3rd sentinel with the sawtooth lips and shoulderpad look)
Evangelon & Big O ... I'm not really familiar with those... I know of them.
Actually ... when I looked at the first sentinel I thought "hunter from halo games" with it's masive armor plates, hefty arm cannons and hunched agressive stance.
I like how the first 2 sentinels have that old style "H" bar in their mouths... Makes a nice subtle visual link to the oldskool sentinels
really the only off-ballance thing is the first sentinal has that hulking upper body and sprinter's legs. But it got approved ... so what do I know

I can see petty much each infulence, but the first one looks like it has a little of the LEGO Bionicle mixed in with the Big O and Gundam, Was that intended?

very nice, seems like the sentinels still dawn the same scary faces as they always have, do you know who first drew the first sentinel? i have always liked the way that they looked. i thought there was a change in the look fo during the Onslaught story, i might have been wrongon that one but hey i am loveing every line of each on of these very well done and very inspirational cant wait to start seeing em in thepages of history, master pieces my friend very much master pieces

ok, first off, almost every submission you've ever done has completely blew me away. Im a huge fan of marvel, though i dont have the money to keep up with the comics, but i love every aspect of Marvel's comic life.
for Ogre, i totally love the look to it. its big, its menicing, it looks like it could do the most damage and be the biggest threat. The detail in the hands just looks like it is the most versitle.
Shrapnel looks quite small, agile, and best suited as like a scout mech or spy. having the guns connected to the back unit does create a problem in close range combat, but then again, this does look more like a scout mech anyway. and out of the 3, i like this head the best, cause it has no emotion showing in the 3/4 head view, much like the idea behind the sentinels in the first place.
now Megaton looks like that could be alot of fun working with. Big, heavy, slow, ultra damage. thats what im talking about! he just looks like he should be holding a big club or something. mabye that thing on his back?
all in all, these are great designs, and exactly the kind of work i hope to do in my future career as a VG conceptual artist. this helped me alot. Im still amased that you work for Marvel, id have no idea where to look for that. i salute you good sir
