I'm sorry but you must be mistaken on the definition of "reference". When you reference from something you take certain aspects of it and fuses it with your own ideas. In this case you basically copied a portion of the linked picture.

I wanted to copy it exactly to practice my skills of copying and working with an image. In my art qualification I have to do exact copies of photographs and other such images, so I wanted to use this for practice

I understand that. It just seems like you should really link to the original source if you're drawing something like this and then posting it on art site (especially when the original is on the same site~)
