Description All you need is 2 triangles pointed towards each other and over lapping. This automatically creates shoulders, waist and hip. Very quick, very simple but a heck of a lot more information than the typical stick figure drawings you see.

When you have the "skeleton" looking pretty good you can have fun with it by adding a face, hair and clothes. I'll talk about drawing the face, hands, feet, hair and clothing for the next 2 months.

Look at these when trying to add muscle and skin:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've looked at many how to draw books for people and animals over the years but they usually target people who have drawn a great deal or taken lessons and frustrate the true beginners with the drawing of odd abstract shapes. If the odd shape looks off it just messes up the whole drawing down the line.

This is for people don't normally draw and have never really tackled drawing people. There is more than one way to approach this but for me, I use triangles. We all know what triangles are and could always use the practice of drawing nice triangles and straight lines.

Hey, I just have a couple of questions, if you don't mind:
1. are the triangles that make the upper body the same size?
2. what is the size of the triangle that makes the lower body to the knees?
3. what is the size of the geometrical figure (can't for the life of me remember it's name) that makes the lower body from the knees to the feet?
4. what is the size of the triangle that makes the feet?
5. what are the general size ration betweetn the triangles?
Thanks Sorry if I made this a lot more complicated then it really is.

1. It depends on the person you are going to draw. Β Some people have larger chests than hips like muscular cartoon superhero men, so the upper triangle would be larger than the lower one. Β Some have wider hips than shoulders, reverse it, bigger triangle on bottom compare to the upper one. Β Some people have evenly matched shoulders to hips... guys who are slender tend to have no waist. Their upper body is a straight tube. Β That's why many guys need belts or suspenders to keep their pants from falling down... Β  Β

2. Generally, if you cut the human body in half the lower half is all legs. Β Cut the leg in half, you'll get your knee position. Cut the upper body in half you get the waist position. Β What you need to do is start out by marking how big you want the person to be, draw the "I" shape, to mark the top of the head and the bottom of the feet. Β The long line down the middle to make sure the person stands straight... and then start diving things in half.Β

3. & 5. #2 answers the same question.

4. Everyone has different sized feet. Β It really depends on the height of the person. Β It is whatever looks right to you. Compare what you draw to what you see of yourself in the mirror or other people around you.

I know, I just checked out your gallery and it's awesome! The triangle approach is so much easier then those sick figures I'm always screwing up.
