You're probably one of the few people on DA that realize with animal-(istic) you need to have clear, evident faces for empathy to be achieved.
Otherwise it's just impossible to like the character.
(BTW, I like this guy, and I hardly ever care for animal characters)

I already have the characters + personality at this moment.
But the only things that are left is color and names.

This is a WIP of mine, that I may end up scrapping. [link]
But I took a lot of thought into the outfits colors. the character, Max, is a depressed, realist, pessimistic, who's angry at himself. Also, he plays guitar. U:
So for the anger, that's red obviously. But I didn't want him to have any bright colors. He's not a cheery guy. So I went with Maroon, a dark red, which seems like a cool anger. An inward one.
then his pants, were automatically blue. Blue pants right? but that didn't fit. So after choosing the whole color spectrum, I realized purple fits, because that's a depressing color.
and then his outfit needed a highlight, so I made the collar and ends on his jacket a rather bright teal color (mostly because it's my favorite color) and it fits well with the others. U:

I'm sorry, but when I saw him he didn't really stand out like an angry, depressed character. :c
The colours are pretty, happy. ;u;
In my opinion.
His clothes are purple and pinkish.
And if I think about someone angry and depressed.
I think mostly of black, and then dark red, just really blood red, but not too much. And grey. And a pale skin. Someone who is depressed doesn't like to go outside, I think. An angry and depressed person is kinda unhealthy and doesn't care about his looks.
BΓΊt I really like the colors in the drawing! Although I don't think they fit very much.
This all above is just my opinion, maybe I'm suuuper wrong and it's all bullshit. But take it as whatever you like! c: I don't mean to offend you or anything.
But I can clearly see your thinking process. I never thought about matching emotions with colours!

he's just depressed not emo. Doing black and white with pale skin would be over the top.
And he's a main character so he still has to be somewhat cool looking.
I'm gonna see about changing them though. Simply because I haven't tried everything yet. x3

Depression is a big deal man, you should google it.
It's more like a psychical disease.
I think a better word for your character is moody?
Or just has a sad personality?
