Description vagary[n]: an unpredictable or erratic action, occurrence, course, or instance; a whimsical, wild, or unusual idea, desire, or action. (Just to clarify.)

Whoa, okay. Clearly, trying to stick to a schedule does not work for me. I’ve just been kinda overloaded with schoolthings lately, though, so maybe now was not the best time to tackle an Advent Calendar… Oh well. I’ll still do them. I guess they’ll just have to come as batches rather than evenly spaced.

Anyway, have some old arts. :> I made this for my Color class back in May/July. I ended up turning it in on the last day of school after working on it all day, so it’s kind of a victim of procrastination and has lazy spots galore. It was incredibly fun to work on, though. I’ve never used so many colors to depict skin! It’s got the whole rainbow!

Also, fun fact—originally, the atmosphere of this picture was supposed to be MUCH darker. As in, being suffocated from behind by an evil witchmonster with black fingernails. However, the time constrictions dictated a simpler background, so I decided to completely twist around my original intent. Hence, happy pictures!
… That’s the process of a lot of my happy pictures.

Tools: chalk pastels

A roundabout download link to the song I'm trying to reference in the title, since it's what I listened to most while drawing this: [link] I haven't been able to find that exact version of Sovay anywhere else, but it's the one that introduced me to Andrew Bird and it's the one I like best.
Actually, I really like all of the songs on that mix, so there we go.

AUGH SO SMOOTH SO EMOTIVE SO COLORFUL SO FRIGGIN' WELL-DONE IN ABSOLUTELY EVERY SINGLE ASPECT. SERIOUSLY. I just LOVE those eyes, they're so sharp and startled and and and there are the COLORS and good LORDY the way you blend the yellow and the blue and the red and the skin tones and the perfect look to that hand and and and just, just EVERYTHING is so incredible. And with CHALK PASTELS. AUGH. 8U

I still think this is awesome even if you say it's rushed.

Well, the thing is, by "lazy spots," I didn't so much mean spots as, er... the entire right half.
I should have layered the colors on her shirt more, her shoulders are SUPER TINY thanks to my inability to understand anatomy, and what I ended up going with to fill in the background was so much less complex than I'd planned.
Also, the nose.

I'm still about 95% satisfied with the final result, which is better than I can say for the vast majority of my other stuff, but there are things I wish I'd had the time to do differently.

Anyway! I'm done. Augh, I am pretty sure nobody is interested in hearing my self-critique.

It's beautiful! I don't really know why I was attracted to the spot but the shading on the hand really blows me away. Actually I love the shading and color usuage in general. WHY...?! Why are you so good at every single medium you try?! Next time there's a National Portfolio Day, I will drag you along to it.

Thank you so much-- b-but I'm not good at every medium, not at all! This is why I love pastel and charcoal. I'm serious, dude, I SUCK with paints and crayons and markers and colored pencils. Big messy dusty things are just the medium that suits how I work, I guess.

National Portfolio Day? :D I like the sound of this. I like the sound of this a lot.

Also, hooray.
HOORAY.
THAT FRIGGIN' HAND.
Oh my goodness I am so glad you are drawn to it because it is definitely the thing I am proudest of. ;_; 'Cause geeeez, was it scary using green on skin. So easy to make it look like a disease. I definitely got really lucky.

Pahh, you are too! At least you're good at the messy ones that I'm not. I fail so hard at pastels. *headdesk* So maybe the fact that you like big messy dusty things is a comparison of the random entropy in your head on paper? Err, wait....

Steg told me about it. There was one in Chicago back in September or early October. Basically you bring your work and the people there critique you on it. Or something to that effect.

I LOVE THAT FRIGGIN' HAND. And no, no disease hand. I don't quite know how scary it is to use green on skin,(I need to be more adventurous with my colouring clearly) but you pulled it off wonderfully.
