Description
In order to warm up after a couple of months of inactivity, today I bring here a compilation of quick drawings I made with the fauna of the Lower Fremouw Formation as a subject. The intention was to show the animals I depicted in my previous drawings in their environment and interacting with each other. The Fremouw Formation was once a gallery forest that grew in the margins of an antarctic river at the beginning of the Triassic. Though much warmer than today, due to the high latitude of the area at the time (70-75º S) the forest experimented extreme seasonal change. No plant fossils are known from the lower part of the formation, but there are quite a few from the upper part, which include fossilized tree trunks, seed fern leaves (from the genus Dicroidium), horsetails and even cycads. I tried to depict an environment similar to a modern temperate forest, although it may have looked drier and less forested than shown here. The sketches depict, from left to right:
Top row: Ericiolacerta-like therocephalian inspecting a lapillopsid, which shows defiant
Archosauromorph with a recently caught lungfish scaring off a Prolacerta and two lydekkerinids attracted by the corpse
Procolophon laughing. Inspired by this (giphy.com/gifs/funny-jimmy-lud… ) gif of a horny toad (which I find particularly funny)
Middle row: Thrinaxodon female with two cubs (with an altricial look) in their den
Group of Lystrosaurus feeding at night
Myosaurus and a nearby worm in a rainy day
Bottom row: Underwater landscape with temnospondyls and a lungfish
Galesaurid cynodont in an underground passage
Antarctanax sunbathing next to the river, surrounded by lush vegetation
