Description
The current region of Brussels was still bilingual during the first half of the 20th century. According to the official census of 1910, half of the population spoke "mainly French" (other half Dutch). However, French had a dominant position in country and status. In the period between 1910 and 1947, we see a huge growth in the number of Francophones, which is depicted on my map.The official language censuses (talentellingen/recensements linguistique) are the only sources used to make this map. There is a lot of controversy regarding these censuses, as they were presumably favourable towards French (mainly the last census). Many native speakers of a Dutch dialect also had a tendency to opt for French.
