he had reached out to save her, to grab her hand and pull her to safety but gravity had other plans. as his hand reached hers the ground beneath his also gave way and with nothing to run on or push off of all he could do was bring her close and shield her.
Knuckles watched as his teams fell and left his sight. panic rushed in him as he ran to the edge of the hole.
“SONIC! AMY! are you alright?! can yo-” his almost frantic yelling was cut short as he gazed into hole. Sonic and Amy where wedged into the hole, pressed together like a sandwich but they seemed to be ok.
“cough! we’re, cough, ok!” Sonic called out. “looks like the ground around the trap gave out ages ago. we didn’t fall to far ac...tu..lly.” he reported to Knuckles in his usual care free tone, until he realized the position he was in and his voiced squeaked out the last syllable.
“well, you two look comfortable.” Knuckles smirked and surveyed the damage. the ground was stable now and the chases of anything collapsing on his teammates where low. “i think i’ll give you guys some alone time. have fun! i’ll be back later!” he yelled over his shoulder as he left to meet up with Tails.
“WHAT?!” the outraged cry of the two hedgehogs echoed throughout the chamber.
“KNUCKLES!! GET BACK HERE! DON’T YOU DARE RUN OFF!” Sonic screamed.
“SO HELP ME WHEN I GET OUT OF HERE YOU ARE DEAD!! DO YOU HEAR ME?!” Amy's voice crack at the end of her screech but all that answered them was their own echos, then, silence. “... he’s not there, is he?”
“Nope...” the annoyed looks on their faces only lasted for a few moments as their anger faded and they remembered what position they where in. “cough...so, this is... uh... awkward...”
“no kidding...” with their faces bright red and their body's jammed together, all they could do was wait. Sonic, at one point, had tried to free himself but quickly realized that wasn’t going to work and an hour or so later Knuckles finally returned... with a camera.

so yeah, this is the type of shenanigans that they find themselves in. also my Knuckles is a bit of a troll, in a weird affectionate way.
