Description

Ported to OBJ from the stock model included with the video game Starfleet Command 3 (SFC3).  Based on the original design created by John Eaves and first realized in CGI model form by Doug Drexler for the Star Trek: Deep Space 9 (DS9) television series.  Class name of Chel Grett comes from Star Trek Online (STO).  Alternate class name of Gor Tann comes from the Decipher/LUG RPG.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

The alien species known simply as the Breen were first mentioned during the run of TNG ("The Loss") but were not seen on screen until DS9 ("Indiscretion"), when the previously unaligned and historically isolationist Breen Confederacy decided to join forces with the Dominion in the Dominion War for what appeared to be easy spoils.  This made them the virtual Italians of the Dominion War if you want to draw historical parallels, although unlike the Italians of both of Terra's World Wars the Breen were ready, willing, and very able to use all of the resources at their disposal as the Dominion's chief wartime ally.

The Breen were a reclusive but warlike species who originated in the colder parts of their homeworld and had to wear refrigeration suits in warmer environmental conditions.  They fiercely protected their own and did not tolerate incursions into their own space, as the Klingons found out during that time in their history known as the Second Empire (possibly FASA's Riskadh line given the dating but this is conjecture on my part).  Like the Borg and Dominion their spacecraft were very powerful, heavily armed and protected, and very maneuverable in all sizes.  The Breen also possessed unique starship combat technologies of their own, such as energy dampening field generators and stochastic field emitters, that proved very effective against the Federation and its allies for a time until either examples were captured or ways were eventually found to effectively combat them.  It is also worthy of note that like Borg spacecraft, Breen starships were "grown" into their full forms (although they didn't grow any more after that) and incorporated organic technology (in part and not in full).  Breen starship designs were like no other and quickly earned the universal nickname of bladeships, given both their deliberately asymmetrical hull forms and their visual likeness to a pile of curved blade weapons.

As the Dominion War raged on and the heavy fighting took its toll on all participants, the Breen were also force to adapt their starships to available wartime resources.  Rebuilt and new built Breen starships often sported copied, captured, or reverse-engineered examples of the weapons technology of both their allies and enemies.  Examples include starship phasers and disruptors in both standard and pulse form, polaron cannon, photon or transphasic torpedoes, and even Reman and Dominon deflector shield technology.  They were forced to "build cheaper" because the Dominion War took a heavy toll on the economic infrastructure of the Breen Confederacy, in addition to its heavy losses in starships from all classes in the war's closing months.  It was fortunate for the Breen that they lost only minimal territories both during the final months of the war and in the various postwar settlements.  They were among the quickest of the known galactic powers to rebuild during the postwar era, enabling them once again to rule the Breen Confederacy with the same iron hand that they had before the war.

This was the Breen stock battlecruiser class during the timeframe of the Dominion War.  It came in two basic forms, the original pre-war Chel Grett and the wartime Gor Tann.  Both are often referred to as Breen interceptors in wartime lore and especially after the introduction of the bigger and badder Sarr Theln class (STO), although this term is a common misnomer and is not properly descriptive of the class.  Both Chel Grett and Gor Tann were identical externally but both were very different in their weapons and protection technology fits.  Chel Grett was the original design and fitted entirely with Breen technology in all forms and in all ways.  Gor Tann was a wartime compromise design and replaced a number of original Breen weapons and defensive systems with other technologies (see list in the previous paragraph) in order to both ease and speed construction or rebuilding.  The survivors from the Dominion War in both forms continued to serve the Breen during the postwar era at least to the end of the 24th century, Terran Gregorian calender, and well into the 25th per some sources.  I have no further information beyond that date.

One final note.  The various weapons and defensive systems fits for Gor Tann tended to vary wildly depending on yard variances (where each was built or some cases rebuilt from existing battle-damaged Chel aretts) as well as whatever was available at the time.  Please consult more authoritative sources for the various Gor Tann wartime configurations.

This is canon, given multiple uses on screen in multiple Franchise media.

"Never turn your back on a Breen."

- old Romulan saying

TRIVIA - The helmets that the Breen wore as part of their refrigeration suits bear an uncanny likeness to that worn by Bossk the bounty hunter in the Star Wars movie Return of the Jedi.  This came from the concept that the Breen in their unsuited form had heads with short snouts.

ASIDE - As I write this it's common practice among Trek fans to refer to all versions of this Breen starship design as the Chel Grett class.  I've included my own unique re-interpreation of the Gor Tann version as a convenient means for those of you who want to distinguish between "normal" and "altered" Breen battlecruisers during the Dominion War timeframe.
