Description
Ported to OBJ, textured, and further modified from the STL format low poly tabletop war gaming model created by Patrick Woodard. Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS. You can download Mr. Woodard's original STL model as part of his Confederate Ironclads Pack at the link below but be warned! STL models normally come untextured because they're made for use with 3D printers, with the end user expected to hand paint the 3D printed model. Furthermore I've added extra parts to this one in order to soup it up a bit and make it look somewhat better. If you want this to look the way it does in the above picture (or even better if you have the skill), then you'll have to round up your own textures and extra parts and do the job yourself, just like I did. Here's that link:

CSS Virginia II was a second generation ironclad ram built for the Confederate States Navy (CSN) during the American Civil War (1862-65) and named for the original Virginia (ex-USS Merrimac) of Hampton Roads fame. She was originally laid down sometime in the spring of 1862 at the William Graves shipyard in Richmond, VA and her construction was funded in part by a special fund set up by the Ladies' Aid and Defense Society of the city. She was intended to be a Richmond class ironclad and is often counted with them in terms of CSN warship discussions in later times; however, her design had to be altered and her construction was significantly delayed due to increasing shortages of critical construction materials in the Confederacy during this time -- iron plate for her armor in particular. For these reasons she was built somewhat smaller than called for in the Richmond class standard design plans, had a noticeably shorter topside armored casemate for her guns, and her armor thickness was reduced by one inch on all sides of her casemate (from six inches to five) save the forward one. She wasn't finished until the spring of 1864, almost two years later (!), and upon her commissioning into CSN service on 18 May 1864 was made the flagship of the James River Squadron in defense of the Confederate capital of Richmond itself. As such she participated in a number of minor battles with Union ground and naval forces for the rest of the year, with the most significant of these historically being the Battle of Trent's Reach early in the following year on 23-24 January 1865. She emerged from this fairly well shot up, and although her armored casemate had not been breached her smokestack was all but destroyed and she had taken such a pounding from Union artillery and the Union ironclad USS Onondaga that her structural integrity was compromised -- on top of which her engines had been rendered unreliable both from damage and from being strained at the max for too long. It took three months to repair the worst of her damage and make her battle ready again, but by then it was too late. Union forces were closing fast on Richmond itself, so Virginia II was set on fire and blown up along with all other CSN vessels in the harbor on 3 April 1865 to prevent their capture by the Union. She was subsequently raised after the war and salvaged for what could be had from remains, then what was left allowed to sink again. The wreck of CSS Virginia II to this day still lies buried deep in the silt near Chaffin's Bluff.
This model is missing many of the finer details of the original Virginia (II). That's because it was originally created for use as a small naval war gaming miniature, and I for my part only added the lower hull structure (borrowed from another model), the missing guns, the small boats, and the flagpoles. That said I think it's still decent for what it is, and it will do nicely as a placeholder for now. I hope you have fun with it too once you download it and start playing with it yourselves. XD
