Widely hailed as the world's first true ironclad warship (although experiments with ironclad-type old style warships had already been going on in Europe during the 1850s and the CSS Manassas actually preceded her both in design and in combat), the CSS Virginia of the Confederate States Navy (CSN) was a vessel built out of desperation from a scuttled and half-burned Union warship (the former USS Merrimac) that would go on to shake the world and be the most powerful warship in anyone's navy for a single fateful day on 8 March 1862. On that day she routed the Union fleet guarding Hampton Roads, Virginia. Virginia sank the Union warships USS Cumberland and USS Congress, and caused three other Union warships to run aground either trying to get into the battle or get away from her. The next day saw the Union ironclad USS Monitor enter and level the field of battle in the engagement known today as the Battle of Hampton Roads; however, by that time the course of naval history had already been permanently changed. This is a straight port with no changes by me.
This is not my model. All I did was port it to OBJ for you. Please credit Tom Sanford if you use this in any of your own 3D efforts. You do not have to credit me for my part.
