Description

Ported to OBJ and further modified from the USS Sicily model created by the late Colin Glendenning for Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 2 (CFS2).  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

These were the last and most successful of the small escort carriers (CVE) built for the United States Navy (USN) during World War II.  They were based on the MARCOM/MARAD Type T3 tanker hull, which not only gave them ample fuel storage even after being altered for carrier conversion but surprisingly long operating range as well - which worked perfectly for their intended purpose.  Unlike many prior USN escort carriers however, such as the older Bogues, all of the Commencement Bay class were built as carriers from the keel up, with additional bracing and structural supports to better fare under combat conditions.  They were the last USN escort carrier class due to entering the war so late (May 1944), and in the end only 19 of the planned 35 were built before the end of the war, only three saw actual service (all in the Pacific), and the remainder of the class was cancelled.  Too small to operate the new naval jet aircraft which began to enter USN service after the war and yet too new to simply scrap, many were converted for other purposes such as aircraft transports, helicopter or ASW carriers, and so on.  Most were taken out of service in the mid-1950s and laid up in reserve, but the few still in commission would linger on in USN service all the way to the Vietnam War era.  All remaining ships in the Commencement Bay class were scrapped during the early 1970s.  To find out more about the Commencement Bay class escort carriers, follow the link below:

This excellent free model, one of the best of its kind around, was originally built by Mr. Glendenning to represent USS Sicily (CVE-118) as she appeared in 1950, during the period of peace between the end of World War II and the start of the Korean War.  That is why it has a USN peacetime grey-based paint scheme.  My only change has been to remove the hull numbers from both the flight deck and island, so you can use this as a generic model to represent any member of the Commencement Bay class.  This peacetime paint scheme will also work for general Cold War era use, including the later Vietnam War.  You will have to provide your own textures if you want a proper custom World War II version for the three that saw service in the Pacific before the war ended.

This is not my model.  All I did was port it to OBJ and mod the textures for general purpose use.  Please credit the late Colin Glendenning if you use this in your own 3D projects.  You do not have to credit me for my part.

TRIVIA - Commencement Bay is considered the best CVE in anybody's navy during World War II by almost any naval expert you care to name, both amateur and historian.  Its only drawback is that it comes so late in the war (mid-1944).
