Description
Ported to OBJ from the SketchUp models created by Atherin. Inspired from an original design by BSG TOS fan and conceptual artist Todd Boyce, which was also used as the basis for a similar craft in the Deadlock video game. Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS. You can download Atherin's original SketchUp models from Google's 3D Warehouse, although you'll have to port them yourself if you need them in other 3D model formats (watch out for flipped normals). ... and here is a link to Todd Boyce's original concept art sketch:
This Cylon small combat craft was the next step up designwise from the classic Cylon Raider in all forms (TOS, deSanto/Singer, PS2003 video game, NuBSG/TRS Cylon War era, et al). It was the direct ancestor of the somewhat larger NuBSG/TRS Cylon Raider from the rebooted series proper. At its heart it was a classic Raider type that had been slimmed down (to lose weight) and reconfigured specifically for the interceptor role as opposed to a general purpose combination fighter and assault craft. Cylon technology improvements at the time also allowed this to be the first single pilot Cylon combat craft, building upon what had already been done with the deSanto/Singer advanced Raider (see separate entry). The wing reconfiguration was meant to enhance its performance and worked so well that it wound up becoming standard for future Cylon fighters, such as its NuBSG/TRS direct descendant and the fanon Cylon Scout from the same period (see separate entry). The classic Cylon Interceptor was not as heavily armed as a classic Raider, again to save weight, and had only the two stock cannons found on almost all Raider types and their derivatives. Nevertheless this was a very formidable craft to face in combat given its incredible agility for the time, and that was a feature it would pass on to its larger, better armed, more advanced, and more general purpose NuBSG/TRS descendant.
Some of these appeared in Cylon service near the end of last Cylon war but both their numbers and use were quite limited (relatively speaking), if I understand the materials correctly, with the Colonials having to quickly come up with an improved Viper type to counter it (the NuBSG/TRS Viper Mark III per the game). Colonial intelligence later deemed that this was probably the main Cylon fighter type during the better part of the Armistice period, with other and older classic Raider types phased out in favor of it, and that it remained so until the NuBSG/TRS Raider was developed.
This is a fairly simple CG model and doesn't quite match either what you see in the game or Todd's original concept sketch. It also lacks both its better texturing and additional greebling. However, it's free and it's close enough to the game model IMHO to cover for it in a pinch. It also comes in two different versions with appropriate textures for each: a normal model and a gold-painted one for Cylon squadron leaders (per TOS battle visuals). If the game model ever turns up, then you can use Atherin's fanon creation either as its prototype or a prototype derived from it for the NuBSG/TRS Raider. That's why I tagged this the way I did in the title line. XD
