Description

Ported to OBJ and retextured by me from the original SketchUp recreation by Nezumi Yuki, aka SketchyBest.  Replacement textures originally created by Dave "First Fleet" Metlesits for his own efforts and reused with permission.  Based on the original design as created by Kazutaka Miyatake and with assistance from the late Leiji Matsumoto for the feature film Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato (Yamato Arrivederci) and which has been reused ever since, sometimes in modified form, as part of the Yamato/Star Blazers Japanese sci-fi franchise.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  You can download the original SketchUp model from Google's 3D Warehouse at the link below, although you'll have to port (hint:  use the Collada DAE download option if available) and retexture it yourself if you want it to look like what you see above.  Here's the link:

EDS Andromeda was the lead ship in a planned class of ten super space battleships to be built for the Earth Defense Force (EDF) as part of its New Wave Motion Fleet build-up following the end of the Earth-Gamilon War.  She had been completed and was undergoing her space trials during the events depicted in the second season of the original Star Blazers, aka the Comet Empire story arc -- as well as the alternate version depicted in the Yamato Arrivederci feature film and other depictions in other Yamato/Star Blazers multiverse timeline threads not related to the later revival series and its timeline (and spinoffs, derivatives, etc.).  She wound up being the only ship of her class due to the speed at which the unexpected and subsequent Cometine War unfolded.  She served as the EDF flagship for most or the war, accounted well for herself through the better part of it, and was subsequently lost with all hands along with much of the EDF in the final action at the Battle of Saturn near the end of the war.  The rest of the class, five of which were in varying stages of completion at war's end and five more barely beyond their space keels being laid (per the dialogue and visuals), were subsequently cancelled given the EDF's inability to complete them due to lack of sufficient resources, as they were needed elsewhere following the end of the war.  At least two of the incomplete space frames were saved, both building in Can-Am at the time, and both of these would serve as the starting point for the later and subsequent successor Arizona class space battleships of the Bolar Wars timeframe (see separate entry once I get it reposted, wink).  I have no information on what happened to the other seven at this time, although it's highly likely that most if not all were scrapped.

EDS Andromeda was the most powerful space warship in the EDF at the time and was respected by just about everyone given how powerful she was.  She was built on the time-honored "all big gun principle" and thus had no secondary battery to speak of and only a very limited point defense battery.  It was intended that a screen of smaller escort vessels would provide these for her while she hammered away at her enemies with her four triple second generation dual mode (beam or shell) shock cannon and her twin second generation wave motion guns.  Despite her flaws she was considered the pinnacle of the EDF's New Fleet program at the time and replaced the older EDS Argo (nee Yamato) as the standard by which subsequent EDF space battleship classes were judged by.

Finally, the details surrounding the life and times of this vessel as well as that of who commanded and crewed her change depending on your choice of timeline.  The Yamato/Star Blazers multiverse was formally canonized with the final episode of the Yamato 2203 (second) revival series, the depiction of which was inspired in part by a similar one in Tim Eldred's earlier Star Blazers Rebith web comic.  I'll be depicting the original Claster English dubbed version timeline or data from ones very close to it, such as the Japanese original and the old Star Blazers Technical Manual.  That said you're certainly welcome to take both the info and images I present here and use them in representing other Yamato/Star Blazers multiverse timelines that you might prefer (such as the "revival" timeline).

It's nice that by this point in time there are multiple CG models of the mighty Andromeda out there, both fan-created and retail, and ranging in quality from low-poly gaming models all the way up to ultra high poly and superdetailed filming quality fan efforts.  I have always found Nezumi Yuki's free fan effort to be comfortable middle ground between these two extremes.  Yes, you'll have to port and retexture it yourself as well as tweak it a bit more either for accuracy with the original or to revamp it more like the Yamato 2203 version, but it's worth the effort in my opinion.  The fact that it's absolutely free to download and use with np strings attached helps too (grin).  Just be sure you credit her for the original CG model, okay?  Thanks.

This is unquestionably canon.  DUH!!!  XD

"As long as fandom lives, Star Blazers lives!"

ASIDE 1 - You can get the names of the others from the Star Blazers Technical Manual.  In my own spinoff thread EDS Fornax is the only one with the early and simpler Hood-like bridge structure and early radars, per Kazutaka Miyatake's original design sketch prior to Leiji Matsumoto's suggested changes.  You have my permission to use my Fornax idea as an earlier completed class prototype if you like, if you want to mod this model appropriately.  You might also want to do a main gun turret swap for Argo's (nee Yamato's) older style and less powerful shock cannons to further the prototype look and feel.  That way you'll have two Andromeda class vessels, Fornax (prototype) and Andromeda (final design) for your own Yamato/Star Blazers projects based on this timeline and whatever those projects might be.  Have fun!

ASIDE 2 - BTW Nezumi Yuki has her own dA page.  Check it out!
