Description
Ported to OBJ from the fan-created model made for the Starfleet Command (SFC) series of video games. Based on the original design for the warp-capable long range shuttle Surak as designed by Andrew Probert and seen in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (TMP). Class name by Eric "Jackill" Kristiansen from his Jackill's series of fanon publications. Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS. NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.
The Manasu family of shuttlecraft was intended to serve as Starfleet's standard "one size fits all" type of shuttlecraft of the TMP era. It entered service at the start of the TMP era, replacing the older and venerated but aging Class F shuttlecraft of the TOS/TAS era. It was a true multipurpose, multifunction design whose size lengthwise could be extended or shortened during construction to provide the right sized interior space necessary for a wide variety of tasks. Four standard sizes eventually evolved that were designated SW-1 (Manasu, also used as the class or family name), SW-1L (Chisu), SW-1H (Atai), and SW-1C (Fikaru). Type SW-1 (Manasu), which is shown above, was the most common Starfleet configuration. Also show is the warp sled concurrently developed for use with Manasu, which allowed it to operate at the same range as a small starship. This particular configuration, standard shuttle plus warp sled, was also used by a number of Federation administrative and diplomatic personnel, with the civilian example show above registered to the Vulcans and painted in their preferred colors (NOTE - All Starfleet Manasus were painted per Starfleet standard schemes). There were also a number of other external attachment and options packages developed for Manasu for various uses but are not covered here, since doing them justice is beyond the scope of this write-up. Oddly enough, as the TMP era advanced, then other dedicated shuttlecraft types also entered service to fill those roles in which Manasu's performance had been less than expected. Sometimes being a jack-of-all-trades means that you wind up not doing well at a lot of them, and that turned out to be true in Manasu's case. All the same it was very good at some of them, such as long-range courier or personnel transport (with the warp sled in both cases), and was in those that Manasu would remain for the rest of the TMP era before being phased out of Starfleet use. Civilian Manasus lasted well into the post-TMP era, and it's possible that a few operational civilian models might still be extant in the TNG/DS9/VOY era.
Both the standard TMP era shuttle as show above (see also TRIVIA) and the warp sled are canon with a capital "C," given its use on screen in TMP.
Live long and prosper.
TRIVIA 1 - You can see three of these parked inside the Enteprise shuttle bay in the original theatrical print of TMP, during the famous drydock inspection tour and shortly thereafter, when Admiral Kirk takes in that grand sweeping view of the new ship's redesigned secondary hull interior. These have normal Starfleet paint jobs instead of what this one has. Look for all three on the hangar bay deck at the upper left of the overview scene. These were removed when the scene was digitally remastered for the Director's Cut in order to clear the hangar bay and make the scene look less cluttered. Here's a link to the sweeping view shot noted above from the original theatrical release of TMP. Look all three at the upper right; two are fairly clear while you can only see one corner of the third.

Now go back and watch the drydock inspection tour right before this in the TMP original theatrical print, and watch for just a peek at part of one of these as the travel pod flies by the open shuttle bay.
TRIVIA 2 - My leaving off the docking ring in the preview piccy for the shuttle by itself was due to the way the combined model was made for SFC, but this also allows me to bring up another little-known fact about Manasu. Any member of the Manasu family of TMP era shuttlecraft can be built with or without the standard Starfleet docking ring on the back. A lot of civilian models (or post-TMP era conversions) didn't have them because they had no need to dock with a TMP era Starfleet vessel. They had other things back there, such as large cargo doors or specialized docking clamps and airlocks for hooking up with other types of starships, and so on. You can take it from there.
ASIDE 1 - Jackill's Starfleet Reference Manual Volume 3, pages 17-25 is the chief fan source of data on the Manasu family of TMP era shuttlecraft. Canon there's only the one type and the warp sled, and THAT'S IT ... but you know Trek fans, and Trek is now officially a multiverse and with all that implies. XD
ASIDE 2 - The fanon Frobisher class starships by Aridas Sofia (Federation Reference Series, et al) were in part inspired by the TMP Manasu wtih the warp sled fitted, according to him back in the day in a post on the old FRS Forums. Now imagine the same general shape as a one-piece hull but significantly bigger and packing full size LN-52 linear warp engines, and you pretty much have the initial design (but not the final one) for Frobisher. XD
