As seen in the video game series. Orbital processing facilities are a specialized form of refining station that are geared towards the processing of various kinds of metals. They receive processed metal ore via freighter or transport from local mining stations either surface or space based and turn it into various forms of refined metals (sheets, beams, blocks, ingots, whatever) that can be picked up and taken directly to a factory (via transport) or job site (via construction ship) for immediate use. You will always find at least one of these as part of any major metals mining operation and operating in conjunction with one or more surface or space based mining stations, with such assignments being more or less permanent so long as they have anything available to process. This is where you go to get refined metals for whatever need you might have, such as duranium or trititanium for the making of replacement hull plating and space frame trusses, various other processed metals for industrial use, or even something as simple as old-fashioned steel for various and sundry common uses. Orbital processing facilities also produce and provide the raw materials in easy-to-ship and store block form that most starship replicators "feed on" for making prefabricated components for various and sundry things. Needless to say orbital processing facilities are very important to life in advanced spacefaring cultures in this era.
