Description This XNAlara XPS compatible OBJ model, kitbashed from parts of the Iowa and North Carolina class models for the later Silent Hunter series of games, is meant to depict a generic late World War II era battleship of the United States Navy.  It is inspired by the actual wartime South Dakota class, which were arguably the best U.S. battleships under construction at the time the war began.  Attempts to improve certain perceived shortcomings of their design, most notably lack of deck space and lack of speed to keep up with wartime fast carrier task forces, would directly lead to their successors - the longer, faster, more graceful, and decidedly elegant Iowa class.  It should be noted, however, that the slightly older South Dakotas had the same firepower as the later Iowas, and also somewhat better armor protection due to their smaller hulls.  In terms of force level discussions, this meant that for all practical purposes they could do everything the later Iowas could do save pace or outrun them.  They proved this fact time and again during the war.  That is part of the reason why the entire class was saved for several years following the end of World War II.  They were eventually decommissioned and scheduled for the breakers, of course, as more modern and missile-armed warships became available in the postwar era.  Fortunately for posterity, two of the South Dakotas, "Big Mamie" (Massachusetts) and "the Queen of Dixie" (Alabama), were saved from the scrapper's torch and survive today as museum ships.

This is meant mainly for those of you who want to keep down the size of your various fantasy fleets, with only selected key warship and auxiliary types represented.  For example, this could cover for all of the USN fast battleship classes (North Carolina, South Dakota, and Iowa) given these conditions.  You can also use it as an alternative to karle94's excellent South Dakota if you want, or even as its own separate fantasy battleship class (I recommend the name North Dakota for obvious visual reasons).
