Description

SPECIAL PEARL HARBOR DAY 2021 POST!

NOTE - This is a replacement image (and entry) of higher quality models than the ones I had up before.

--------------------

Ported to OBJ and further modified from the Pennsylvania class battleship models present in both Silent Huniter 4 - Wolves of the Pacific (SH4) and Battlestations Pacific (BSP).  The SH4 prewar mod is by moltke2005, while the BSP post-Pearl refit mod is by me.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

USS Nevada (BB-36) was the lead battleship in her class and the first of the so-called American "Standards," in that all USN battleships from Nevada all the way to the cancelled 1924 South Dakota class were all built to the same basic standard design.  Her importance to naval history and battleship construction is that Nevada was the first battleship built to the all or nothing principle of armor protection, in which the ship's vital areas are the most heavily protected (as they're the most likely to be targeted by an enemy) while its least vital areas receive the least amount of protection, instead of trying to protect as much of the entire warship as possible.  This idea proved itself in practice and remains a key component of warship construction even today.  Nevada served in both World Wars and was the only battleship present during the Pearl Harbor raid on 7 December 1941 to succeed in getting underway during the attack, although she had to be beached due to massive damage.  Her sister ship Oklahoma took so much damage in so short a time during the attack that she capsized and sank, taking many of her crew with her.  She was declared a total loss and was later raised only to be stripped for anything salvageable before being scrapped.  On the other hand the grounded Nevada was eventually patched up, refloated, and sent Stateside for a major repair and refit job, emerging on the other side in the form you see here.  She spent most of the rest of World War II primarily as a shore bombardment vessel, participating as a fire support ship in both the invasion of Normandy and four other major amphibious operations before the war came to its end, after which she was removed from service due to her age.  She also survived the very first atomic bomb test at Bikini Atoll during Operation Crossroads in 1946, although she was badly damaged and was rendered extremely radioactive.  Unfit for further uses, she was eventually towed out to deep water and expended as a gunnery target ship on 31 July 1948.  To find out more about the American battleship USS Nevada, follow the link below:

As stated above these are modified ports by moltke2005 and myself, largely due to the fact that the Nevada is not properly represented in either the original release versions of both the Silent Hunter and Battlestations series.  Both use a Pennsylvania class model to cover for Nevada, as the two were very similar visually and despite the fact that Nevada had two main guns less than Pennsylvania (in superfiring twin turrets over triples, instead of Pennsylvania's all triples).  The prewar modification of the game stock Pennsylvania to correctly depict Nevada is fairly easy because of their similarities, with the only other significant visual change required being to add the notch at the stern for Nevada.  Far more work was involved in recreating the post-Pearl refit version of Nevada, given all the changes that were made.  I've done it for BSP (see above) and I intend to do it as well for the Silent Hunter series once I find the time.  In the meantime, enjoy the images of both models - before Pearl by moltke2005, and after Pearl by myself.

While I am no longer making my OBJ ports of either version of Nevada available for general download, you can get some free fairly decent low poly pre-Pearl Pennsylvaina class models and at least one high-poly model from the online Microsoft Flight Simulator series community.  The original models, in both early cage mast and later tripod mast form, were created by the original CFS2 Virtual Navy team's Pearl Harbor project, and the later high-poly Pearl version by Chris Herring.  These can be modified (as noted above) to correctly represent the Nevada class with any good 3D editing program. There is also stuart277's excellent post-Pearl Nevada, which is possibly the best low-poly version available in terms of quality versus poly count, although unfortunately it's a Sim Outhouse exclusive as I write this (i.e. membership required).  All of these and more are available via the online Flight Simulator series fanbase, and can be found free for download with some diligent searching, but I'll go ahead and give you a direct download link for Chris Herring's high poly Arizona.  You'll have to use the free ModelConverterX program to port it to OBJ before you can work with it in your preferred 3D modeling software.  Also please pemember that you will have to modify it in order for it to properly depict the preceding Nevada class (notch the stern and change the superfiring triple main gun turrets to duals):

There are other downloadable 3D models of the Nevada class out there, both in pre-Pearl and Nevada's post-Pearl refit forms, available in a variety of model formats, and they can be found with any good Internet search. You'll be happy to know that the ultra-high poly World of Warships take on the post-Pearl Nevada is also out there and floating around in the Internet ether for you to find.  Good luck!

TRIVIA - The post-Pearl rebuilt version of Nevada debuted in 2019 as a Tier IV battleship in the United States tech tree for the Legends lineup in World of Warships (WoW) by Lesta Studios.
