Description

Ported to OBJ and custom textured by me from the STL format model by crazygit.  Based on the original design as created by Forest Brown and Dana Knutson for FASA Corporation's various Trek Franchise licensed gaming products back in the day.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  You can download crazygit's model at the link below but be warned!  STL models are made for use with a 3D printer and come untextured, with the end used expected to hand paint them after printing them on a 3D printer.  Furthermore this model is presented as one solid piece and is thus very difficult to break into individual parts for proper texturing.  Anyway, here's the link:

The Kinshaya are one of the few intelligent species in known space in the Trek multiverse who can rightly claim to have put the Klingon Empire in its place, as it were, should they ever care to claim it.  They inhabit a large area of space on one of the Empire's borders known as the Demon's Rift.  The Klingons have always claimed the Demon's Rift as their own in spite of the Kinshaya presence, and it was due largely to the expected and usual aggressions by the Klingons in the first half of the TOS/TAS era when the Kinshaya decided they had finally had enough and were going to do something about.  Their battle fleets came screaming out of the Demon's Rift with both technology and weaponry far superior to what the Klingons had at the time, and dealt the Klingon Empire its first major blow since its founding.  Had not the Empire been arming for a war with the Federation at the time and thus had sheer numbers to offset the superiority of Kinshaya vessels, then the subsequent Demon War would have had a quick and bad ending for them.  All the same it took everything the Klingons had at the time to beat the Kinshaya fleets back to the Demon's Rift, but once they got there they could go no farther.  That was when the Kinshaya called in their reserves and held the line against wave after wave of massed Klingon attacks.  The Demon War finally ground down to an uneasy stalemate for the simple reason that both sides had exhausted themselves, and this state of affairs - an uneasy unofficial truce - has been maintained at the Demon's Rift ever since.  The old Imperial Klingon government officially claimed a great victory over the Kinshaya and much hullabaloo was made about it at the time.  The Klingons still claim victory even to this day, although the surviving unedited and unredacted accounts of those Klingons who actually fought in the Demon War (along with subsequent revelations by the Kinshaya far later down the timeline) tell quite a different tale.  That said, the Klingons still occasionally probe the Demon's Rift looking for any signs of weakness, but sooner or later (often sooner) the Kinshaya virtually stomp on such probing and it ends for the time being.  I also note that in some threads of the Trek multiverse and far later down the timeline in the late 24th century, after the various Borg incursions, the Kinshaya will come out of the rift and join the Typhon Pact during the timeframe of the Dominon War, fielding a whole new array of superior starships and weaponry of which the Klingons could but dream.  I'll let others deal with the Kinshaya in that time frame; my focus for my Kinshaya sub-gallery at Mandel's is on their TOS/TAS and TMP era starships.

Code named Demon Fire by the Klingons (Th. H. De'baH [dee-BAH]), these were first encountered operating as command ships for the Kinshaya reserve forces holding line at the Demon's Rift near the end of the Demon War.  They provided cover for what was left of their Klingon invasion fleets as they returned to Kinshaya space in the Demon's Rift, and together with the new Demon Strike class medium void spheres and other older Kinshaya starship types repeatedly prevented Klingon attempts at a massed invasion of Kinshaya space in order to end the war in outright victory for the Klingons.  Demon Strike had been trouble enough even for the mighty Klingon B-1 Jul'kar class battleship, but Demon Fire outclassed in every conceivable way save speed (it was no faster at maximum warp).  It was fortunate for the Klingons that the Kinshaya had already decided that they had proven their point in starting the Demon War and were by then merely content to defend their borders, not wanting to lose any more ships and their crews in the war.  Almost all authorities agree that if the Kinshaya had gone on the offensive again at this point with Demon Fire to back their invasion fleets then it is certain that the Klingons could not have stopped them, given how depleted they were from the war effort.  The Kinshaya were depleted too but they still held a firm technological edge over the Klingons and their losses had been far fewer (although their total fleet strength was smaller, an important factor to consider).  The Klingons would have tried all the same to desperately defend themselves (and "... it would have been glorious," to borrow a famous quote from Commander Kor), and there are countless sim studies and war gaming exercises on the matter, but the end of all of them result in a clear-cut Kinshaya victory.  Again, it is fortunate that the only time the Klingons had to deal with Demon Fire in numbers was when it acted on the defensive during the final stage of the Demon War.

Please be advised that the color scheme you see is entirely my own.  I have no idea what the official FASA color scheme for Kinshaya ships is supposed to be, as I never bought any of the gaming miniatures back in the day and I can't find any scans for the official FASA one.  If anybody can or has them, please let me know and I'll try to update accordingly when I find the time.  You are also welcome to download krazygit's model and "paint" it yourself, and you can in turn have as much "fun" applying your own textures as did I.

This is semi-canon, as it comes from a Franchise licensed product (the old FASA gaming materials).

ASIDE - If you want to know what a more advanced Kinshaya void sphere from the TMP era looks like, then check out these old fanon design sketches by Atolm (aka AtolmAzel), which I featured on one of the pages of my own Guide to the Klingon Fleet (GKF):

If you need more ideas for other types of Kinshaya vessels from the early TOS era then check out this sketch by deviantArt's own zvjerkourski:
