Description

NOTE - This is a replacement entry for my original on this Klingon starship class featuring a newer and higher quality CG model.

--------------------

Ported to OBJ, textured, and further modified by me from the "TMP B-1" STL model recreation by the prolific Captain Mojo in order to better suggest its intended subject.  Custom textures originally created by Dave "First Fleet" Metlesits for his own various Trek CG modeling efforts.  Based on and further modified from both the original B-1 class design as created by Patrick Flannery for ye olde fanon Star Fleet Handbook series (SFH) and the C-5 light dreadnought concept created by Stephen V. Cole and his associates at the Amarillo Design Bureau (ADB) for the Star Fleet Battles (SFB) tabletop sci-fi wargame.  Starfleet Command (SFC) series video game adaptation and original TMP era redesign (in particular the warp engine mod) and original CG model by Terradyhne.  Jul'kar and Kuyper class names and additional background data contributed by me, Richard Mandel, as first given in both the Klingon supplement to my fanon Federation Spaceflight Chonology (FSC) and in revised form in my later fanon Guide to the Klingon Fleet (GKF).  Hey, did I miss anybody? (grin)  Sing out now! (pause)  Okay, going on.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  You can download Captain Mojo's original TMP era B-1 Jul'kar model as part of his Klingon Ships of the Star Fleet Handbook Part 1 model pack at the link below, but be warned!  First, you will have to further mod his TMP era B-1 model yourself in order to turn it into a proper TMP era C-5 Kuyper like you see above in the preview piccy, unless Captain Mojo makes and releases his own version at some point in the future.  Second, STL models are made for use with a 3D printer and aren't normally textured because the end user is expected to hand paint the 3D printed model.  If you've done the appropriate mods and want your finished effort in textured form, then you'll have to do it yourself just like I did.  Here's that link:

The TMP era C-5 Kuyper class, or more properly Khamin Kuyper in full form (Kl. "Captain Kuyper") was the very last iteration of the old Klingon B-1 Jul'kar class battleship, whose origin dates back to the early TOS/TAS era.  That said, about the only thing it had in common with the old Jul'kar was its looks and configuration.  It was Jul'kar completely redesigned and built anew (as opposed to rebuilt) from the ground up as a proper TMP era starship class.  There were several reasons why this happened, but they can briefly be summarized as the need for a stopgap Klingon superheavy capital starship class in the early TMP era to go with its other new early TMP era classes (K't'inga, Lecthu, et al, see separate entries) due to resource gathering and construction delays in several newer and even more powerful Klingon capital superheavy classes (K'herr in particular, see separate entry).  To meet that perceived need the old Jul'kar plans were dusted off, completely redone for the early TMP era and thoroughly reworked with TMP era technology just like the D-8 K't'inga was the tried and true D-7 Klolode reworked the same way (see separate entries).  The end result so pleased the Klingon High Command that they sought for and won approval for a single production block of 24 new build Kuypers to be built over a ten year period.  No more were planned, as it was hoped that by then the first of those delayed newer and even more powerful Klingon superheavy capital ships would either be already in service or be entering service by then, and that is in fact what happened.  That's why Kuyper was one of the few Klingon TMP era starship classes that had only one production run.  I also note that as part of the authorization for construction Kuyper was formally classified as a dreadnought (Th. H. qugh'duj'a'), the same classification to which the older Jul'kar had been downgraded, given the newer and far more powerful B-10 Kar'harmer class (SFB, see separate entry) that had taken over the Klingon battleship classification (Th. H. may'Duj'a') at that time for its own.

It is very easy to mistake an older TMP era upgraded B-1 Jul'kar for one of the newer C-5 Kuypers given the fact that both were based on the same general design and thus look very much alike, and that includes the expected TMP era "shielding refit" with extra armor hull plates and more powerful shield generators installed.  There are three key identifying visual characteristics that set the two apart.  The first and most obvious are Kuyper's longer custom STN series warp engines (Th. H. pi'jonta) with their very unique extended and tapered front ends.  These were essentially slightly tweaked versions of the ones originally developed for K't'inga (and which became TMP era standard for the Klingons) but modified on their front ends for the fitting of experimental heavy disruptor weapons in tried and true TOS/TAS era style, as standard disruptors had been mounted back in that era, and this was done in order to increase Kuyper's available firepower.  This STN engine variation would prove so successful with Kuyper that it was subsequently backfitted to a number of Klingon warships in both Imperial and House fleet service during their first major refits later in the TMP era as available funds and suitably modified custom Kuyper style STN engine supplies allowed.  The second and again rather obvious one is at the back of the command boom.  You will note a prominent double-sided bulge there on Kuyper that is completely absent on the older Jul'kar.  This was originally for the fitting of two additional Kunu Kin type compact impulse engines, similar to the ones used on smaller TMP era Klingon new starship classes, so that Kuyper's command boom would have additional impulse capability (plus the one normally concealed at the base of any Klingon command boom) if a boom separation event was required.  Their mere presence also made for an excellent independent power supply for everything in Kuyper's command boom.  Only the first seven Kuypers got impulse engines, with the rest of the class getting TMP era auxiliary power reactors (APRs) installed instead because the use of impulse engines in this location was quickly deemed superfluous (*).  Both provided the same amount of power under most conditions and the same housing was used for both, so the only way to tell the difference is to look for the telltale exhaust vents of impulse engines present on the back of these extra command boom bulges on the first seven Kuypers.  Third and not so obvious but to some the most important, advances in Klingon photon torpedo weapons system technology permitted Kuyper's designers to dispense with the over-under dual tube arrangement used on the older Jul'kar and replace it with a side-by-side, double-barrel system mounted in the lower position only and with both tubes feeding from a common magazine.  The aft firing tube and system was also replaced with a more compact TMP era version.  Why?  Because this freed up two additional spaces both fore and aft that were designated as option mounts for anything that Kuyper's users (or in the case of the various Houses its buyers) wanted to put in there that would fit in the available space.  If you look at the preview piccy above you'll see two odd-colored hull plates both fore and aft in these locations, directly above the photon torpedo tubes both fore and aft, and those are the covers on the stock Kuyper for the spaces designated as option mounts.  This was one of Kuyper's strongest selling points and explains in part why it remained in service for so long with the Klingons despite being a limited run class.  Naturally both the Imperial fleet and the various Houses put anything and everything into those option mounts on their respective Kuypers.  Multiple extra phaser or disruptor banks, extra photon weaponry, extra heavy disruptors, stasis field generators, all of the new weapons systems that were developed for the later TMP era puq'pu Thl'drn generation of Klingon warships (KA/SFC, nudge-nudge), and more.  About the only thing that wouldn't fit in either Kuyper option mount was a battleship class assault disruptor (KA/SFC) - not that Kuyper was either big enough to mount one or had enough available on-board power to even arm it - but there was still a LOT of stuff that could and would work with Kupyer with only minimal yard time for adaptation and installation.  Use of these option mounts weren't just limited to weaponry either, and I encourage you to, uhm, "research" this particular Kuyper design wrinkle on your own - if you know what I mean (grin-and-wink).

Kuyper production ended roughly a decade after it began, as expected, with the 24th and last hull launched even as production of its larger and more powerful successor K'herr (SFB, see separate entry) was beginning to ramp up and the first few of the even newer voD'leHs (KA/SFC, see separate entry) were finishing their final fitting out and getting ready to enter service themselves.  By then Kuyper had been available in sufficient enough numbers to fulfill its original purpose of being the Klingon's stopgap superheavy of the early TMP era.  Kuyper would continue to serve in both Imperial and House fleets (in the latter chiefly as flagships for some of the less affluent Houses) for the rest of the TMP era and most the way through the post-TMP era.  None survive into the TNG/DS9/VOY era in my particular thread of the Trek multiverse although perhaps they might in yours.  If they do, then they're going to be badly dated and probably showing both their age and lots of wear from decades of use.  I think it's safe to say on the part of those of you who want a few old Kuypers to be still around then that like with almost all of their other starships over the years, the Klingons would have continued to use them until they literally wore out from beneath them before sending them off to be scrapped.

This is a bee-yoo-ti-ful model in the TMP era B-1 original and all creds to Captain Mojo for making it in the first place.  It didn't take much for me to mod it into Terradyne's TMP era take on SFB's C-5, and for what it's worth I nabbed the "points" for the new warp engines off of a TMP era Vor'cha.  They'll do until somebody makes ones closer to Terradyne's original design.  That exception aside everything else is here, with both the option mount feature and extra impulse-or-APR module being Captain Mojo's original contributions to this new version of Kuyper.  I hope you like it, and I hope it inspires my fellow Klingon fans regardless of whether you're a ridgehead, smooth-head, or whatever.  Q'apla!

This is fanon, although it's excellent fanon and as you can see from the credits list a lot of people have contributed to the Jul'kar/Kuyper design evolution over the years.  Feel free to use as you need for your own efforts in your particular thread of the Trek multiverse.

'IwlIj jachjaj!

(*) - They couldn't be used as such under normal operating conditions, given that their expected venting path was blocked by the ship's engineering hull while the boom was still connected -- which meant they were only good under normal circumstances for providing extra power ... just like an APR was normally used.  Hence the swapout.  Be sure to delete those extra impulse engine vents from that command boom bulge module if you're depicting one of the later Kuypers with APRs installed there instead.

ASIDE - Don't forget.  You get only 24 of these total, with no more built if you stick to the script.  Use the wisely and use them well.
