Description
Ported to OBJ from the fantastic custom model created by the legendary fan CG artist Atrahasis for the Starfleet Command (SFC) series of video games. Backstory revised and further elaborated on by me, Richard Mandel, in my fanon publication Guide to the Klingon Fleet (GKF, pp. 66-67). Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS. NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.
IKV Molkatha was a one-of-a-kind starship that served in the Klingon Imperial Fleet (KIF or IKF depending on the Trek multiverse thread consulted) starting from the early TMP era all the way through to the beginning of the TNG/DS9/VOY era. She started out life as one of the later D-10 Riskadh class heavy cruisers, built from the keel up with TMP era Klingon technology as part of one of the early TMP era Riskadh production blocks. Upon her return from her first full tour of duty for her first major refitting, the Klingon High Command decided to pull Molkatha from regular Imperial fleet service for use as its latest technology testbed vessel, thus replacing an older (unnamed) vessel that had long served the same role but was nearing the end of its usefulness due to age. Molkatha was practically brand new and in excellent shape, so its easy to understand why they did this. Molkatha was subsequently rebuilt and reassigned to serve as a testbed ship for the various technologies that were being developed at this time for the Klingon space battleship program. Molkatha's large size lent itself naturally for this. and she would serve in this particular role until near the the end of the TMP era. Molkatha was hurriedly returned to front line fleet duty for a few years following the Praxis Event (ST6) given the press of need resulting from that near-cataclysmic event; however, she was again removed from service once enough other Klingon starships types became available to fill the resultant production void and Molkatha was again returned to serving exclusively as a technology testbed. She would remain so for most of the rest of the post-TMP era until she too became too old and worn out to continue in this unique role, and just her predecessor she too was replaced by a newer starship at that time. Molkatha was then returned to regular fleet duty to serve out her final years as a front line Klingon starship. Her final fate varies depending on which thread of the Trek multiverse you consult. In some she was removed from service and scrapped early in the TNG/DS9/VOY era. In others she was around long enough to take part in the Dominion War (DS9), and depending on which of those threads you consult she was either destroyed in battle with Dominion forces or survived the war and was around long enough for, shall we say, an "honorable" retirement in the best Klingon fashion. Whatever goes, you know.
The image above depicts IKV Molkatha in her final late post-TMP and early TNG/DS9/VOY era form, once she was returned to regular fleet service for the final time and no longer serving as a technology testbed. Please note that during the TMP and early-to-mid post-TMP eras Molkatha's appearance could and frequently DID change every few years, as selected experimental technologies were tested and then later removed and replaced with others for testing. For example, during the back half of the TMP era Molkatha sported a prototype of the battleship class heavy disruptor that was eventually finalized and used with the massive B-12 qeyliS BetleH class battleships. She was also fitted with two customized older G-type transport containers mounted to her lower hull and full of almost nothing but auxiliary power reactors (APRs in SFB slang) in order to help her in powering up and firing the weapon, as her own warp engines didn't put out enough power to do so effectively. Both the heavy disruptor and the APR-filled G-type containers were removed in a later technology testbed refit. In other examples, Molkatha was fitted with various types of new and/or experimental warp engines at various points in time, and likewise with various types of additional sensor package platforms usually mounted topside aft in raised platforms. She even sported a topside weapons roll bar upsized from the one used on the piH class frigate at one point, again for experimental weapons testing purposes. Speaking of which, Molkatha's onboard weapons loadout frequently varied across the years given any experimental fit at any given point in time during her service as a technology testbed, as did the number and types of shuttlecraft she carried. The only time she was ever returned to service during this period was for a few years after the Praxis Event as noted above, and she was still in her latest post-battleship program technologies refit form prior to that when this happened. She remained in that form for that entire brief period of service until she could be spared for returning to testbed ship duty. Trek Klingon starship fans of the TMP and post-TMP eras of a customizing bent are encouraged to come up with their own takes on the various forms that Molkatha took on during her service time as a technology testbed. I think the rest of us might see some wonderful things come from such efforts, just as Atrahasis did with his original concept.
IKV Molkatha is fanon even though it's based on a semi-canon Klingon starship design (FASA's D-10 Riskadh class).
