Description
Ported to OBJ from the fan created model included with the Robotech Pack for the Starfleet Command (SFC) series of video games by Activision. Based on the original design by Kazuhaya Miyatake for the SDF Macross television series. Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS. NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.
These were the original "space carriers" of UN Spacy, aka the Robotech Defense Force, and were one of the firstfruits from the giant advances in Earth technology caused by reverse-engineering what was found aboard the wreck of what became known as the SDF-1, before it was eventually rebuilt. Although designed for independent operations they were also built in such a way so that two of them could link up with the rebuilt SDF-1, one on each side, and acts as its "arms" as you will after a transformation (NOTE - this is only seen in the original Macross movie; the TV series and its Robotech analog follow a quite different path there). They were among the most impressive Earth spacecraft for their time, massing approximately 175,000 metric tons apiece (some sources claim as much as 475,000 tons), with their own reverse-engineered artificial gravity systems and a mix of both nuclear fusion and reflex furnace (reverse-engineered) engines to drive them. They had an impressive array of on-board weaponry that included first generation reflex weapons (reverse-engineered) and thermonuclear missiles, but their primary purpose was as stated earlier to serve as spacegoing carriers for all of the various small combat craft Earth was hurriedly building in anticipation of the arrival of the Zentraedi. They normally carried somewhere between 300 to 600 of these of various types (sources vary on exact maximum); the mix seen at the start of the series included Lancers, Veritechs, Ghosts, and a far smaller number of recon and transport craft. In other words, comparable to what a regular naval aircraft carrier would carry in similar proportions, although dramatically increased in number. At least 14 were built and possibly as many as 20 per some sources (although we only ever see three), but as with everything else they proved no match for the far more powerful Zentraedi warships once those arrived at Earth. They did far better than one might have expected against such odds, basically trading off one-for-one in terms of ships destroyed or damaged well beyond their ability to continue fighting, but as there were so few ARMDs and well over a million Zentraedi space warships of various sizes and classes this trade-off made hardly a dent in overall Zentraedi strength. Six more ARMDs were built after the war was over, with the first two being given the names of ARMD-01 and ARMD-02 in honor of the first two lost during the war, and those survive to this day as museum ships.
It should be noted that the design for the ARMD differs somewhat between the original TV series and the first Macross movie. This low poly CG model is pattered on the TV series design.
This is a straight port with no changes by me.
While I am no longer making my personal OBJ ports of SFC series models available for general download, and while practically all of the old SFC fan sites are long dead, you can find many of their downloads archived at places such as NexusMods and Lone Bullet. Furthermore there are SFC model format plug-ins available for both the old Milkshape 3D model editor and the hoary old GMAX program (the free ancestor to today's rather pricey 3DS Max) that between the two will port 99% of all SFC models ever created. Finally I recommend the Milkshape path over the GMAX path whenever possible, as there's some extra hoops you've got to jump through with the GMAX path in order to export to the standard OBJ 3D model format.
For non-profit, non-commercial use only.
TRIVIA - All ARMDs were given individual names per the original Macross series and movie data, although in Robotech they are simply called Armor 1, Armor 2, etc.
