Description
I'll be updating the entries with images of new CG models for the Novik/Orfrey class destroyer and the Uragan class guardship either today or tomorrow for the Soviet section of the World War II wing of my online Century 21 Virtual Navy collection (C21VN). This is a comparison of the model I had (upper left), sourced from one of the old Grey Wolves eXpansion packs (GWX) for Silent Hunter 3, with the new one I obtained not too long ago from the Soviet Waterway (SW) mod for Silent Hunter 4 Gold Edition (SH4G or SH4 1.5). As you can see there's a world of difference between the two models. The older model is a rather obvious Clemson hack, while the new one is an excellent retail level scratchbuild that's pretty much dead-on accurate. My hat is off to the wonderful people behind both the Battle for the Baltic and Soviet Waterway mods for making all of these new models, as well as givng those of us who have become aware of your efforts a a look at part of the naval side of World War II that we knew almost nothing about. I can't speak or read your language, nor can most people reading this, but all of us are grateful for your efforts.
That said, I'm not getting rid of the old fan hack job, no more than I didn't get rid of the inaccurate Yasen class sub model from Naval War: Arctic Circle. It may have served its purpose in standing in for a proper Novik/Orfrey model, but I think it'll be easy to find a new one for it. For my part, I can still use it to cover for other similar World War I era three-piper destroyer classes from various nations for which I still don't have models. The American Paulding and Caldwell classes; the French Arabe; the Japanese Sakura, Isokaze, and Tanikaze classes; and so on. You can do the same, or throw it in your generic warship model pile for use with fictional navies of your own devising and such. "Nothing useful should be discarded," as the old saying goes. You know?
