Description

Ported to OBJ from the game stock model created for Silent Hunter 3 (SH3) by Ubisoft, and as further tweaked for the fan-created Grey Wolves eXpansion v3 (GWX3) for SH3.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

The Type II series of U-boats were originally developed by Germany (in this case the interwar Weimar Republic) in order to train the personnel who would operate its future regular submarines.  They were designed and built in the Netherlands via a dummy company that was set up by Germany as a means of circumventing the severe Versailles Treaty restrictions on German submarines, following its defeat in World War I.  Their basic design had originally been worked up under contract to Finland (!) for building a small coastal sub (CV 707 or Vesikko), which the Finns in turn used with their own small navy.  The Finns honestly did not know from whom they were buying their new boat, and its development served as a good cover at the time for developing the entire RKM Type II series in general and the early Type IIAs in particular.  These were never intended to be combat boats; however, the ascension of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis to power in Germany in 1933 changed everything, of course.  All of the advance work that had been done by the German Navy, now known as the Reich Kriegsmarine (or RKM in my book) now paid off, and the first Type II U-boat, U-1 (the first of the Type IIAs) was laid down on 11 February 1935 and both completed and entering service just four months later by the end of June.  It and the rest of the Type II series were widely regarded as the most advanced small submarines in the world at that time, and as intended they allowed future RKM U-boat crews to cut their teeth using what were essentially the modern training subs available back then.  Their use during World War II was limited due to their small size, restricted interior space, and rather short operating range.  In fact RKM sailors took to calling their Type IIs by the name of Einbum, which translates as "dugout canoe" in English.  Only six Type IIAs were ever built, all by Deutsche Werke AG at Kiel, with production quickly switching over to the improved Type IIB.  U-1 was sunk by a British destroyer in 1940, U-2 lost in a collision in 1944, U-3, U-4, and U-6 were all taken out of service in 1944 and cannibalized for spare parts, with their hulks later seized and disposed of by the Allies, and U-5 was lost in a diving accident in 1943.   The only Type II submarine which still survives (aside from wartime wrecks) is their close design cousin and unwitting class prototype, the Finnish submarine Vesikko, which was pulled ashore in 1959 following its decommissioning and eventually restored as a museum ship after almost two decades of effort.  It was finally opened to the public in 1973, and is located on the shore of Artillery Bay at Susisaari Island in Finland.  To find out more about the German Type IIA U-boat of World War II, follow the links below:

This is a straight port with no changes by me.

While I am no longer making my OBJ ports of Silent Hunter series models available for public download, you can get this yourself in one of two different ways.  You can extract it piecemeal from the game data after installing any mods as listed above with the SKWAS/s3ditor model editing utility and then rebuild it in your preferred 3D modeling software, or you can install the mod(s) and then rip the model from the game's Museum feature using any good 3D model ripper (3D Ripper DX or NinjaRipper recommended).

The only free model I know of out there on the Internet at this time (January 2022) of the older Type II series U-boats is stuart277's low poly Type IIB for Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 2 (CFS2).  That's currently a SimOuthouse exclusive, BTW (membership required).  Those of you with the 3D skill can probably retrograde it into the older Type IIA with the help of your preferred 3D modeling software.  The main changes involve shortening the hull and making the conning tower a bit smaller.

For non-profit, non-commercial use only.

ASIDE - These were used primarily as coastal submarines during the early years of the war during those times they were deployed on combat patrols, given their small size and limited range.
